Sunspots with no magnification

It's clear (and CCCOLD) out here in Ohio. I put on my eclipse shades for a peek at the sun and was amazed to easily see a big sun spot group without any magnification. I'll admit, I don't look at the sun daily, but I've never been able to observe surface detail on the sun without magnification before. Does anyone here know if such a big feature is common? ~Kelly

FS: RCX400 10"

I don't know the protocol for posting items for sale, so here goes. RCX400 10" with field tripod, wedge, stock finder and telrad. Also comes with a JMI case. The power supply failed a few months ago, so I've replaced it with a more robust 12v power supply, but other than that, all functionality is good. I purchased this about a year and a half ago to get back into variables and astrometry, but due to the light pollution where I live in Grantsville, I've pretty much given up on that idea, so I'm selling to fund a ham radio moonbounce project. Asking $3000/obo local pickup in Grantsville only. Its currently set up in my living room where I can put it through the motions. Pictures available on request. Brian

Thanks Patrick. No love with lovejoy. I thought I had it pegged where it was, just to the south and slightly lower than Vega. Alas, I couldn't find it. Hopefully I'll get another chance, but I know it's getting smaller. He's baaaack!

Howdy folks. I've been away for awhile, in part due to Bill Gates' shoddy products, in part because of family/personal issues. I hope it's OK to come back and play with y'all. I just got back from doing a little meteor watching. Even though the Quadrantid peak was supposed to occur yesterday afternoon Utah time I wanted to see what I could this morning. I left the house a little past 4:00 for one of the more convenient dark sites for me, about one-half mile away. (You should all be jealous.) I made a serious count from 4:30 to 5:30. I observed nine Quadrantids and five sporadics during that hour but I saw nothing spectacular. Two of each were perhaps first magnitude and left short-lived trains; the others were fainter. The weather was actually more interesting. The temperature was 29F when I left home and 35F when I got back about 6:00. This time last month our low reached -29F (December 6). When I spent a couple of hours early on December 14 hoping to see a few Geminids the temperature was about -15F, so this morning's heat wave was unexpected. I've been colder in mid-summer at some of our favorite observing sites. Happy New Year to everyone! Kim

Venus is huge right now. I was just outside looking at it with a tiny 8x20mm bino (2:00 PM MST). The crescent is obvious. With the sun behind a juniper, Venus was about one hand-span away from the sun, at about a 45-degree angle to the upper left. Easily visible in broad daylight even so close to the sun. Venus will pass inferior conjunction on Jan 11th, but should be visible in daylight up to and including that day. It will pass about 5 degrees north of the sun at closest approach. Just be sure that the sun itself is either behind an obstruction or below the horizon when you observe, to avoid eye damage.
