We were up in the Uintahs this weekend camping. Just thought I'd post about Eliz Ridge where we went. When we got there on Saturday afternoon there was a gate just after the turnoff past the top of the road (where the elevation sign for Eliz Ridge is). We were concerned, as we weren't sure we wanted to just go through it. So we decided to drive back down to the ranger station. Fortunately for us there were 2 ranger trucks parked by the elevation sign. :) We asked them about it and they said it was just for the Rainbow People, to keep them out, and we could go camp there. So we moved the gate (simple wooden gate) and went on through. Made it nice and quiet. LOL. So if anyone heads up there and is concerned, it's probably okay to go through to camp. Cyn

possible video project

Does anyone on the list have the hardware & software required to grab frames from 8mm video tape, then stack and process the final images? I have footage of comet SL-9 impacting Jupiter in the summer of '94, and would like to pull some still images from it before the videotape begins to deteriorate. I got this footage by making a bracket to hold my camcorder on the telescope, using eyepiece projection and HAND TRACKING at over 300X! I am still amazed when I recall those evenings, the view in the eyepiece and on the monitor. I just couldn't believe that the impacts were SO visible, and I got to see it in my lifetime. Is the dust storm subsiding? I got a pretty good view this morning of the darker areas on Mars. It seemed better than Tues morning . This planet begs for more magnification and more aperature. The seeing didn't support powers over 175X (5mm Radian). Next time I'm going to get the 8" out before I go to bed and let it cool down or warm up. It was 84 degrees this morning when I observed. Joe, Please send me your moon photo! I am glad to see someone take the plunge and buy a nice scope too. I've been thinking of an LX-200 for quite some time but I keep finding excuses not to. Did you get a 10"? UHTC? GPS? How hard is it to set up and run? Mind if I call to chat about it? Bob

There is still surface detail to be seen despite the storm warnings. I used my 6" f/8 Newtonian, at powers of 280x-320x. Best view was at about 290x. Seeing was poor to fair, of the "slow" variety, with a bit of atmospheric dispersion thrown-in. Result was a clear view only every fifteen or twenty seconds for a moment. Best contrast of surface details was with a #56 light-green filter. "Melt line" clearly seen around the polar cap, which is huge. The area of Ausonia & Eridania appeared about as bright as the polar cap, indicating the possible presence of atmospheric dust. Gibbous phase obvious. As morning twilight advanced, the view went sour and the planet turned into an orange featureless ball by 5:15 am. A well-spent hour despite the indifferent seeing. Here's an old trick: Any eyepiece-barlow combination can be used to make your own "zoom" eyepiece. Pulling the eyepiece back in the barlow barrel increases magnification slightly. You'll have to touch-up the focus as you vary the seperation, but it's a neat tool when working near the diffraction limit of your telescope. You can tweek the magnification to just exactly the right power. Push it until you reach the point of diminishing returns, then back-off just a tad. You can tweek it as conditions change. Clay Sherrod has images from 2 nights ago posted on the ALPO Mars page, and although the storm is on the edge of the disk of the planet, it certainly appears to be growing fast. I think I'll try and get out of bed early tomorrow morning for a peek, just in case this storm keeps growing and sticks around a while... Now, if it does, all is not lost. S&T has an article on locating Phobos and Deimos in the current issue. If you have never spotted the moons of Mars, now is a great time to try. I have personaly never seen them in anything smaller than a 10" scope, but I've heard and read that it's possible.
