Harvard and the BB drop

I just heard from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, of all places, about the ball drop. They are interested in including our drop experiments in a documentary they are doing on meteors and impacts. So much for those who have tried to say there's no science involved in our project. No I don't. Is he ATMOB or SLAS? I actually didn't know a lot of the scope makers in the club, since they were always inside walking around a barrel. I was always outside looking at stuff ;-) Michael, do you know Donald Dilworth? Who was it you heard from, Patrick? Was it Noreen? Mars "thingy"

The Mars "thingy" was mentioned in today's MER briefing. As a number of us speculated here just after the thing was first spotted, one of the panelists said they don't know for sure what it is but think it is part of the spacecraft, probably part of the airbag system. The New York Times also did a piece on the object (in the same issue where they talked about our bowling ball project). They too mentioned the airbag connection but did so in a much more humorous way. There does not appear to be a direct URL to it but try going to http://www.nytimes.com/pages/weekinreview and click on "GRAPHIC Martian Bunnies?". Thanks Chuck. When we moved, we tossed a lot of old S&T's. I'm sure we don't have that old issue. Was that Gary Seronik's little travel truss Dob by any chance? Michael Michael, for my idea of the "perfect" small Dob, see S&T, March '99, Telescope Techniques dept. The 10" version is in the works. IMHO, all the commercial Dobs are about the same.
