I had originally planned to go somewhere near St. George to (hopefully) have warmer weather. However, with the promise of warm, sunny weather statewide, I think I'll go to the Wedge instead. So, Joe, are you going there for sure? Gravel Pit Directions

FYI, some of us from Utah County may be at the gravel pit Friday night for any of you that want to join us there and brave the cold, weather permitting. Gravel Pit directions follow (also on the UVAA webpage under messages, general discussion, July 1 2003 post). Sorry for you folks in SLC, these directions are written for someone coming up Provo Canyon, but Exit 4 is the same one to take if you are coming from the other direction: ---------- Drive up Provo Canyon and through Heber as you normally would to get to Park City; from I-80 take the Park City/Kamas Exit 4. At the bottom of the exit ramp, go East (right) towards Kamas. Take this road for 1.6 miles to the Peoa - Oakley turn-off. This turn-off will be on your left. You know you are approaching it because there are several "Deer-Crossing Ahead" signs. Since the Deer Crossing is at the turn off, the distances on the signs are also the distances to the turn-off. This is Browns Canyon, but the sign says Peoa - Oakley. Take this road for 4.2 miles, to the Park City Harper Gravel Pit road and sign on the left. (About 1000 feet before you get to the gravel pit road, there will be an orange sign on the right that says "truck entrance ahead".) At the gravel pit sign, turn in. Watch out for the speed bump at the entrance! Go about one and a half miles up this road. There is a "mobile home" weighing office off to the left. Just after the office there is a parking area (for the office), which is where we set up. Park towards the far side of the parking area, so that your vehicles are not blocking scopes that are set up to view towards the South and East, which is where the best skies are. This is only a star party. There are no amenities, and no camping. Let me emphasize, this is not a "spend the night and camp out" location. Please use good star party etiquette; dim headlights if arriving after dark, and be sure to bring red lights for wandering between scopes, etc. so you don't spoil dark-adapted eyes. ---------------------------- There may be folks both nights up there, again, I plan to try and be there on Friday (no promises yet). Patrick, I may be the only one who was confused about this but I've been thinking that 2004DW and Sedna were the same object. Hmm, this thing is really out there...to get an idea of distances beyond the classical solar system, Pluto is about 4 light-hours from the sun, but Sedna at the far point in it's orbit will be something like 5 light-days from the sun, or roughly 1/73 of a light year! Am I far off the mark? The old Solar System is a pretty respectable chunk of real estate these days, you know? (Man, won't that be tough duty for a Space Marine one day. "This isn't Sgt. Pinback. Sims for cloudy nights

I'm not usually a PC gamer, but the following two spaceflight simulators are just INCREDIBLE. Both of them are also FREE programs. The imagery in these two programs is spectacular. I could keep going with the superlatives about these programs for quite some time. <g> www.orbitersim.com - Space shuttle simulator and more http://www.shatters.net/celestia/ - Spaceflight simulator, solar system to interstellar travel (also for Mac OSX). Now if I could just get them to include relativistic effects. <VBG> This program was featured in S&T about a year ago. Clear skies, Dale.
