Moon occults Venus this morning

Just a reminder that the moon will occult Venus this morning. The sun will be above the horizon, but Venus will be clearly seen next to the lunar crescent in even the slightest optical aid, such as binoculars. See if you can spot it disappearing behind the bright lunar limb, and suddenly re-appearing from the dark opposite limb sometime later. It will seemingly appear out of nowhere in a telescope since the dark portion of the moon will be indistinguishable from blue sky. http://www.space.com/31296-venus-vanishes-behind-the-moon.html If someone wants to use their planetarium program to calculate the times of disappearance and reappearance for Salt Lake, feel free to post them. Same down here in Hatch, nice photos at0800 but then the clouds moved in for the imergence. Will try for emergence at 1100. Replacement for nexstar+ handcontrol

Recently the hand controller took some damage and is no longer operational. Does anyone know of a way to calibrate a Celestron CGEM without a nexstar+ hand controller? Is it possible to hook a laptop directly up to it to calibrate and slew? Thanks for your suggestions.

So, keep working with them; you may end up having to buy a new hand controller from them, but my guess is you can avoid the expense of sending the mount. Another thing to check is the battery in the hand controller itself (it may well have one of those quarter-sized flat batteries that desktop computers typically have on their motherboards); I had that problem with my hand controller for a different mount I have (not a Celestron).
