SLAS Internships Available

Spread the news that SLAS is offering two internships to youth at least 15 yrs old. Take a look at the description and application in the attachment. If you are a teacher, tell your students. Brent, like David I don't understand where the misconception about the Oct 8 eclipse came from. However, if the Gods permit clear skies again, we'll be able to see the entire show. With partial ending at 6:35 a.m., and the beginning of civil twilight starting at 7:04 a.m. (according to the US Naval Observatory's Astronomical Applications Deptartment), there's a good window of darkness for those of us in the West wanting to stick it out to the very end. October Eclipse

According to the NASA web site, on October 8th the lunar eclipse umbral phase begins at 1025 UT and mid eclipse is at 1054 UT. The end of totality is 1124 UT. That translates to 0425 MDT for the start of the umbral phase and mid eclipse is at 0454 and totality ending at 0534 MDT.. Sunrise on that day is at 734 MDT and moonset is at 0743, almost 3 full hours past full moon time. Please help me understand why this eclipse will not be visible here.

Very nice Joe! While watching Channel 4's news yesteerday afternoon they showed a similar picture, but the newscasters seemed confused for a few moments and then misidentified Spica for Mars. Perhaps after the next eclipse in October someone from the club could coordinate with them to make sure they're giving out accurate information on celestial objects that might be in a photo with the Moon? Also, in line with Chuck, if we don't have enough ash in the atmosphere to make October's eclipse a, "Blood Moon!" as well, we should ask the local weather forecasters not to promote as such. Eclipse: moving shadow?

I am working on processing some images from the Quarry Bend star party of the eclipse: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/PfMBXArypRaGS_8Yzq_tMbjs7i-NclWSB9dbX… I'm surprised that when I align the stacked images on Spica, not only does the moon move right-to-left, as expected, it seems the earth's shadow moves left-to-right. Is that real? Why would that be? n the image linked above you can see how the moons on the right lay over top of the shadowed portion of the next moon. I expected to see a nice earth-shaped shadow in the middle of the image once all the photos were aligned. These were taken with my Nikon D7000 riding piggy back on my telescope (fork-mount on a wedge), 10 minutes apart. Dion
