The comet will be close to earth so its exact position in the sky will depend stongly on your location on the globe. I wasn't impressed with the R&T vaudeville routine and I think we need to keep clear that we are an astronomy club, not a high school physics class. I don't know that there are a lot of aspects of astronomy that can be demonstrated on stage other than the simplest facts, like moon phases. SLAS Meetings

Brent, I remember your retrograde demo. I remember thinking "WOW! Now I get it!" I like show and tell meetings. Since I returned from obscurity the meetings the past 3 years haven't been fun like they used to be. I am sure part of my problem is my partner isn't here with me now. OAS meetings usually started with about 15 minutes of show and tell and I remember showing my collection of astronomy ties. I remember showing some new binos and selling them at a profit before I went home. Whenever someone had been to a distant star party, eclipse or observatory they would show slides at both OAS and SLAS meetings. Deloy

Replicating a hissing meteor

First, thanks to Chuck for the explanation on how we hear hissing meteors.For those on the list who haven't as yet heard a meteor, as well as newbies to the night sky, there's a way to replicate the sound of a hissing meteor. First, you'll need a small paper clip ( 1 to 1-1/2 inches will do), some aluminum foil, and a book of matches (the cardboard kind thay you rip out of the holder). On a flat smooth surface, hold the large outer loop of the paper clip with a finger and lift the smaller inside loop with another finger so that it sits at a 45-degree angle. That becomes your "rocket launcher." Now cut a piece of aluminum foil (not the heavy duty kind) into a 1-inch by 1 inch square. Place the match head in the center and fold the foil in half over the match head. Take the length of the foil and wrap it around the match head, being careful not to make it too tight. Place your "rocket" on the tilted side of the paper clip and placed a lighted match below the "aluminum head" of your rocket until you see a wisp of smoke exiting the bottom of the foil. At this point, listen carefully as your rocket (or meteor if you prefer) makes a "hiss" as it launches like a model rocket. That's very, very close to what those two meteors sounded like back in my younger days. Some 40 years and countless meteor observations without hearing another one has gone by. But who knows, maybe one of you might get lucky with a little patience. Good hunting! Tom Sevcik

Show and Tell

Unrealized by most, show and tell needs to be fairly well organized. Not everyone is comfortable standing in front of an audience and talking. However, when they realize its only for a minute or two, they are happy to do it. You need about 10 people. So you "advertise" for a month or two until you get enough, but all are welcome. You even ask people you know who have something new. I remember Jerry Foote and his short demonstration at a show and tell. He demonstrated the various methods to "lock" down screws. Doesn't sound too interesting until he related the story behind the quest. He used to have a 10" on a trailer and the screws holding the mirror got loose and so did the mirror. While he traveled over rough roads his mirror rumbled up and down the tube. Fortunately, not a lot of damage to the mirror, but his heart palpitated a bit when he discovered what had happened . I would suggest Tyler and his astrograph be on the schedule. I would also volunteer, I have something in mind. I'm sure Chuck could find "something" in his workshop to talk about. So there are three maybe not exactly "ready, willing and able" (hehehe) but it's a start. Although, in all fairness, Tyler could probably take an evening of his own with the astrograph and his results!! For what its worth, to the powers that be on the SLAS board.
