Iowa Night Skies

I got a couple clear nights for some all sky photography. Here is one raw photo of Orion and Taurus. Next ATM session

Howdy all; Consider yourself invited to the next ATM session. This will be held on Saturday, 12/21/13 from 09:00 until 13:00 in my garage. Just a thought, but if someone out there is really motivated, you could use these sessions to learn how to make small dobs for the SLAS giveaways. How cool would that be, a local ATM making scopes to help the local club! Come learn how to make telescopes, or if you are an old time ATMer, come by for a brush up. IIRC, When I criticized the cover 'way back I got a big lecture, the upshot of which was that they have to print long in advance. True. But still, they should have had better editorial judgement. Anyone here see the AWB Dob mentioned in the January S&T "Hot Products for 2014"? I've heard from a few people that the Firstscopes SLAS has been giving away to kids at star parties leave something to be desired. So I'm wondering what the scope experts here think of maybe replacing the Firstscopes with the AWB Dobs. And speaking of the "Hot Products for 2014" article, it surprised me to see no Meade products listed. I'm pretty sure that's the first time that's happened. Surprised me enough to having me going to Meade's website to make sure they are still in business (they are). patrick

new astronomy group in St. George

I'm pleased to announce the formation of the St. George Astronomy Group -- an informal association created to (a) exchange ideas and foster fellowship among people with an interest in astronomy, (b) to host public star parties, and (c) to promote proper lighting and dark skies over St. George. There are no officers, dues, or formal meetings, and membership is open to anyone who wishes to actively participate (others can sign up to be notified of public events).
