Another eclipse

Speaking with some folks at this evening's Wheeler Park star party I came to realize that not many people know we've actually got two eclipses coming up. One of course is the annular on the 20th. But we've also got a partial eclipse of the Moon on tap for the wee hours of the morning of the 4th of June (the day before the Venus transit). patrick

NASA at the Leonardo

I am passing this message on to all here on this list. -A Good morning astronomers. NASA will be visiting The Leonardo Sci+Tech+Art Museum on May 25-26, bringing a special exhibit (Driven to Explore, fact sheet attached just for review) that focuses on the role International Space Station plays as the centerpiece of human spaceflight activities while being a world-class research and development platform, where our future exploration plans will take humans, and how we’ll prepare for long-duration space travel including everything from the challenge of making sure astronauts’ bodies remain healthy while in low gravity environments for months at a time, to the new spacecraft and launch vehicles that will take us beyond earth’s orbit, to the robotic missions we’ll send in advance to pave the way for extended-length human exploration. It also includes a moon rock that’s available for the public to touch. For each area we visit, we look for opportunities to share our message away from the physical location of the exhibit with community outreach activities whether it be with schools, professional organizations, etc. We’d enjoy the opportunity to work the Salt Lake Astronomical Society and other clubs in your area in some way to share information with members. Come visit with us, touch a piece of the Moon, and share what you do. The Leonardo will be open from 11 am to 10 pm on Friday the 25th and from 11 am to 7 pm on Saturday the 26th. What I was most concerned about is that the diameter of the lens is the same as mine, so it has the same light-gathering capacity. But because the focused image is smaller the light hitting his Reyna will be more concentrated per area. We want to avoid any eye damage. Eclipse eye safety

Hi All, I have a question that one of you may be able to answer: I bought a pair of solar filters for binoculars, at the planetarium. As expected, they work great with my 400 mm. telephoto lens. We are traveling to Newcastle for the eclipse with a couple of friends, and I want to lend him one of the filters for his camera. However, his camera's lens is 135 mm. instead of the 400 mm. of mine, which means the image of the sun would not be as large as in my setup. Would the fact that the sunlight is more concentrated pose a danger to either Aaron's eye (as he looks through the viewfinder, since the camera doesn't have a live screen view) or to the camera itself? That seems unlikely to me because presumably many binos are about that size. Also, the rim of the filter fits over my telephoto, but Aaron's is exactly the same diameter as the rim.
