Mark your calendar for early evening May 7. Their will be a close encounter between the Ring nebula and periodic comet 73P. The comet will be close to earth so its exact position in the sky will depend stongly on your location on the globe. Go to spaceweather.com and use the link at the bottom of the page for "Observable Comets". 73p is in the list and includes orbital elements and a link for daily ephemerides. SPOC Cleanup Saturday

Howdy folks, SLAS members on the list will have heard of this already but knowing there are a few non-SLASers here I thought I'd mention it here since those who are not members are also welcome to participate in the socialization, food (and work...). I hope to see a bunch of y'all out there Saturday, patrick SPOC Cleanup Saturday An all-day SPOC cleanup has been called for this coming Saturday, 3 March. There's lots to be done so we'd like to get as much help as possible. Morning people can arrive as early as 8:00 am with others showing up as they can. The club will supply drinks and snacks throughout the day and there will be a break for lunch. Suggested items to bring include ladders, hand tools, hedge trimmers, cleaning supplies, brooms, dust pans, vacuums, rakes and shovels. And don't forget gloves. Unlike most SPOC events this will be held even if the weather is not the best as there are lots of things to do inside as well as out. Those planning on attending are asked to let Rodger Fry know. He can be reached at rcfry(a)comcast.net.

Coulter question

The 13 inch Coulter I bought used moved very sluggishly so the first thing I did was replace the azimuth bearings with textured Formica and Teflon. The next was put a JSL Crayford 2" focuser on it. I added a Telrad. I epoxied a strip of Velcro to the top of the tube at the base so I could move a 3 lb. lead shot bean bag counter weight which my wife sewed up and down it when using different weight eyepieces. I was going to replace the 3 1/4" secondary with a 2 7/8" but never did. I even had plans to retube it with 15" pvc but didn't get around to that either. I used some hole saws on the the base to lighten it. I stopped after taking 5 lbs off because it was beginning to get slightly top heavy. Deloy Pierce
