Mark your calendar for early evening May 7. Their will be a close encounter between the Ring nebula and periodic comet 73P. The comet will be close to earth so its exact position in the sky will depend stongly on your location on the globe. Go to spaceweather.com and use the link at the bottom of the page for "Observable Comets". 73p is in the list and includes orbital elements and a link for daily ephemerides. Within the last month there's been renewed information of the rate of melting of the Greenland ice-sheet, in addition to melting in other zones, such as Mt. Kilimanjaro. Thousands of ice cores taken over the last century show that the ice goes back tens of thousands of years. If it had been as warm during the Roman era as your sources indicate, that ice would have melted then or would never have formed. Arctic permafrost that has been stable since the last ice age (as shown by the number of mammoths preserved in it) is rapidly turning to mush. Of course you can find a few scientists who disagree with this assessment, just like you can find a few scientists who don't like evolution. You can find a few scientists who believe in ghosts, in Sasquatch, in fairies, in alien abduction, and in all sorts of things. It is extremely rare in science that someone who goes against the grain is shown to be correct (Galileo, Kepler, etc). Most of them are just cranks.

I just came across an article in today's on-line D News about the iPhone (I want one, BTW) in which several paragraphs appear to be in Latin. (!?) Knowing there are many ejecatd folks here I thought I'd ask and see if anyone can tell me what it says. Roll-off roof observatory

Hi All, I have been given the green light to have built an observatory to house the 12" Nishamura telescope that was donated to Northridge High School last year. I've spent about 8 hours on the Internet over the last 2 weeks looking at various plans that can be ordered or even printed for free. Does this illustrious group have any suggestions of preferences on the best one to build? I've read the pro's and con's of domes vs roll-off roofs, but the Davis School District building department doesn't build domes, and they're probably out of the budget anyway. I'm guessing I have probably somewhere in the neighborhood of $10k to spend on the facility, although donated materials and labor may help me extend that somewhat. I'm hoping to build something about 12' by 16' in size, but may have to settle for 10' by 12' depending on cost estimates. I'd be especially interested in hearing from those who have recent experience with the SLAS roll-off roof observatory. Thanks, in advance, for all your kind help. Wayne A. Ideas for Portable Shade when Using a Solar Scope

Here's Maurice Gavin's DIY Origami PST Sunscreen - http://home.freeuk.com/m.gavin/solatrax.htm SLAS club member Nate Goodman probably has the best that I've seen. A piece of aluminum flat stock with the a 1" right angle on the bottom. Two holes in the bottom of the flange receive the tongs of a large U-bolt - fence coupler. A U-bolt, about the size of the PST tube is inserted downward over the PST tube, through the flange and then is bolted against the flange from below. There are so many PSTs out there now, that commercial shades are - or atleast were - available, e.g. - http://www.astro-engineering.com/Coronado/coronadoaccessor.html http://www.binoculars.com/products/astro-engineering-solarmate-observing-sh… The astro-engineering design has a nice feature to hold multiple e.p.s on the scope. The full canopy idea is definitely worth looking into. Do any of you clever "build it yourself" folks have ideas on a way to set up portable shade for the viewer while looking through a solar scope? We just bought a Coronado PST and we're trying to think of clever ways to set up shade on our driveway. Having one person stand (i.e. me) holding an umbrella doesn't enhance my viewing pleasure.
