More experimenting with the equipment tonight. Trying to see for myself the effects of binning. FYI: All pictures have been processed with PhotoShop to make them more net friendly (the original 1x1 shot is over 6 megs but the version below is only 260 kb). Should anyone want to see the originals, let me know and I'll email them. I'll leave the pictures on the server for a few days. Dawn is breaking. The stars in your images do not look bloated to me, comparing them to other high-end imagers on the web. They look relatively large due to the image scale that you are working at. Stars that are bloated by differing exposures from the bright foreground stars verses faint background nebulous detail can be shrunk early in processing using: 1) Clip-stretching with a maximum threshold reduction 2) Gamma brightness stretching [then stack] 3) Richardson-Lucy deconvolution 4) Combinations of 2 and 3. The main trick appears to be only clipping and stretching the image to reduce only the maximum side of the brightness histogram. That reduces the number of pixels displaying for the bright stars but does not reduce the detail in the faint nebula. But, not being an experienced imager, I'm hesitant to discuss it. I am glad people find it useful. I am trying to avoid turning it into a replication of the RASC monthly calendar or the S&T monthly pullout. Where such common celestial events are listed, I tried to add links to other information. As a reminder, wiki is based on the principle of a shared authorship space. Anyone should feel free to add items to the list or to change an existing item. For example, are there any upcoming Vandenberg launches on the scheduled launch list? Learning the wiki markup language is part of the learning curve. However, my existing startup list has examples of common tasks: level 2 and 3 outline items, external url links, embedding pictures to non-copyrighted items, a small table.
