There is one thing you guys haven't considered in building a raceway and that is the lifestyle of the racing fans. You really think that we can have a raceway without beer being served? The state would have to change the liquor laws in order to accomodate the racing fans. Just look at the 2002 Olympics as an example. They had to bend the liquor laws to accomodate the people. I don't think you guys have anything to worry about because all of the major speedways serve some sort of alchohol. It would be like going to a football game without beer. The fans wouldn't stand for it and I think the racing fans are just like the football fans. I don't think they are going to change anytime soon. Geminid meteor shower

Tonight is the peak for the Geminid meteor shower. From what I saw Saturday night, it should be a good one. I saw anywhere from 30-40 Saturday night. The meteors were just shooting across the sky while we were imaging with my DSLR camera. One meteor looked like a roman candle as it headed south and lingered like a firework. And this was before midnight. I'm hoping for an even better show tonight. Debbie

Ebony Star

Ive had several queries about Ebony Star lately. It is a Wilsonart product, not Formica brand. Product #4552, it comes in about a dozen formulations (post-forming, chemical resistance, etc.) but the "standard" product is what we as ATMs are after. It comes in 3, 4, and 5-foot widths in lengths of 8, 10, & 12 feet. If there is enough interest, I'll buy a sheet if others buy at least 1/2. I think the 3-foot width is fine for our use, but there might be less waste with a 4-foot wide sheet. I have cutting and trimming capabilities. My cost from our supplier is $1.44 per square foot, regardless of sheet size purchased. There will be 5% handling fee, but no sales tax, so add 7 cents per square foot. Now that is the way to view meteors in Dec. Soak in a hot tube all night and look up! Very good idea indeed. I detected a slight tail in my 30sec images of the comet. I'll be able so see it better once I get the images downloaded to my computer. The nucleus was also interesting in the 25" Obsession. It's also worth mentioning that operations with a lot of money behind them have a long history of 'forgetting' lighting ordinances until it's too late. Then they whimper about unfair expense and anti-business environments. In the end, most local councils buckle under the pressure. Take a look at Larry Miller's automobile businesses some night and you'll get the idea.

Tooele racetrack

I just saw a story on KSL to the effect that Larry Miller is planning to build a huge, "world-class" car-racing facility on the road between Grantsville and Tooele. The renderings and siteplans I saw were for a very large facility, tens of thousands of seats, acres and acres of track. Like a Daytona or Indianapolis... I hope this doesn't compromise SPOC or the Lakeside site; to say nothing of the traffic problems it will bring to highway 201 & I-80. Anybody have further info on this? I went out at about 10pm Saturday night and took a look thru my 10 X 50mm binoculars. Orion was real high and there was no obscuring clouds or glow. The comet looked really large. I haven't seen Omega Centauri but is did look bigger that M22 does in a telescope. When I first started looking at it I thought I saw a tail headed up and left, towards Orion. Has anyone else seen a tail or heard of anyone reporting seeing the tail. Comet Machholtz

Hi, I drove out to the Kayenta desert community, west of Ivans UT last night around 9:30 pm. I wanted to wait a few minutes while Orion and Lepus were rising out of the St. George sky glow. I turned my 15 X 70 binoculars toward Auriga and viewed M38 and M37, my two favorite clusters in Auriga. I then viewed M35 in Gemini, a real treat in binoculars. After that I viewed the Hyades in Taurus and then the Pleaides above. I love the blue stars in that cluster. My arms were getting tired since I don't have a tripod or parallelagram mount for the binoculars so I let my arms rest for a few minutes. By that time, Lepus was a little higher in the sky so I searched west into the constellation Eridanus. Anyway, I found this big, bright round fuzzy object about the size of Omega Centauri. I'm not kidding, this thing is big.It was bigger and brighter than I had expected to see it. I thought "wow, this thing is going to only get brighter next month". I couldn't detect a tail but I'm thinking I should go east of town next time to a truly dark site and take some photos of this comet. It did not disappoint me. It is going northward more each night and the show will get better from now on. Debbie
