PPP offloading - anyone figure it out?
This is probibly an old issue... but has anyone ever come up with a good explination of PPP offloading, and.. in what situations should I enable/disable it? I went through about 4 weeks of users connecting, verifying, then dropping. Out of panic I disabled PPP offloading on both arcs in the chassis and my phone has not rung in hours. The $64 question... what did I do? Why did it happen? The TCS 4.5 docs say that PPP offloading controls what card does PPP framing.. the ARC(?) or the modem/DSP(?)... and thats it. Can an ARC card handle 7 DSP's worth of PPP framing work? sho cpu utiliaztion showed all 0% util. Anyone got an idea on what happened? Paul, PPP offloading - There are two ways how ppp framing is done in the ARC. One way is to set the ARC to do the PPP framing and the other way is to have the HDSP to do the PPP framing. Basically when we talk about PPP framing we are talking about the checking the ppp frame striping the headers etc. The modem or the HDSP uses hardware to strip the PPP headers, and to recreate them when sending out while the arc uses software. Technically for speed using the modem/HDSP to strip the PPP framing is good for you use the hardware asic that is faster. Yes the ARC can handle seven DSP's worth of ppp framing that is not the issue but would like to know what caused you to play with the ppp offloading in the first place.
