Modems Permanently Busy
Hi all. I have some USR total control parts that I've put together to try to setup a remote dial-in pool. I have the following pieces: 1 Chasses w/ 45A power supplies 3 Analog V.34 modems 1 Network Management card (hardware version 2.0, software version 4.3.8) 1 HiPerARC I've gotten everything configure but I'm running into an odd problem whereby the modems are permanently busy. I've gone over the configurationg numerous times and setup things according to the various manuals for an "ISP" type setup (users dial in to obtain an IP, etc..). Can someone help me troubleshoot this problem? I realize I haven't given much information but please let me know what you need and I'll be glad to post it ASAP. Thanks a lot!! -- Jason
I seem to recall a similar problem a long time ago when we used quads. It may be that the ds0's aren't mapped to the modems. Take a look at this: Open Total Control Manager and follow these steps: 1. Click on the entire T-1 card 2. Click on configure 3. Click on program settings 4. Click on DSO<->Modem Configuration 5. Select a DS0 in the left column that you want to map Legend a. Green Already connected (mapped) to a modem b. Aqua Available c. White Unavailable d. Yellow Selected 6. If the modem that you are trying to map the ds0 to is White (unavailable), the modem may not be configured to have the line interface source of t-1tdm. Insure that the modems have a line interface source of t-1tdm: a. Select individual modem b. Click on configure c. Click on program settings d. Click on Line interface options e. Verify that the line interface source is set to t-1tdm. Just a thought. Thanks for the reply, but I don't have a T-1 card and I couldn't find an equivalent setting on either the HiPerARC or the NMC. I have TCM version 5.5 and it doesn't seem to be able to talk to the HiPerARC. I get an error of "Programmed Settings not supported for this card or version". I've been using TMC for configuring the NMC and the HiPerARC manager for managing the HiPerARC. I've done some messing around and I now have it to the state where the modems ring but do not answer now. Quads labelled "Analog", no. If they are labelled "Analog/Digital", no problems. Just make sure the line source on the modem is set to "nic". Point tcm to your NMC IP, not the HiPer ARC, click on a modem and choose the "Line Interface Options" pulldown. You'll see one of the options is something along the lines of "line interface source" with a pulldown for T1tdm, PRItdm, and nic. You want the nic setting. Don't forget to set and then go out and do a save to nvram. Your arc must either be set to either use chassis awareness or you will need to specify what types of modems are in each slot, and their density. Charles

The modem cards I have are labeled "Quad V.34 Analog Modem" which I'm assuming means that HiperARC + Modems isn't going to work for me. I have a very old Netserver PRI as well which I've tried before and that doesn't seem to work either. TCM can't configure it becuase it says "Can't read a home directory from netsrvr.ini" so using the serial cable I've attempted to configure it following the book which seems to be very short on troubleshooting information. Does anyone know how to get TCM to work with this card? If I were to pick up a few Digital/Analog modems, does the analog NICs I already have work? They're labeled "Quad Analog/RS-232 NIC" Again, sorry for the newbie-ish stuff. I know the mibs might be a little bit different depending on which version of TCS you're using but for those that are monitoring traps sent by the chassis to a NMS.....does anyone have a complete list of all the mibs for the total control chassis and the order you have them loaded? For instance, I would like the human readable for something like .1.3.6.1.4.1.429.4.2.2.0.10. and none of the mibs that come with TCM seem to include much of the .429.4's. Also...I seem to be getting a lot of .1.3.6.1.6.3.1.1.5.5 traps (authenticationFailure). I do know you can enable/disable this on the NMC but I believe it would be of the .429 variety. Anyone have any idea where these might be comming from? If the modem that you are trying to map the ds0 to is White (unavailable), the modem may not be configured to have the line interface source of t-1tdm. Insure that the modems have a line interface source of t-1tdm: a. Select individual modem b. Click on configure c. Click on program settings d. Click on Line interface options e. Verify that the line interface source is set to t-1tdm.

1 Chasses w/ 45A power supplies 3 Analog V.34 modems 1 Network Management card (hardware version 2.0, software version 4.3.8) 1 HiPerARC
I've gotten everything configure but I'm running into an odd problem whereby the modems are permanently busy. I've gone over the configurationg numerous times and setup things according to the various manuals for an "ISP" type setup (users dial in to obtain an IP, etc..). Can someone help me troubleshoot this problem? I realize I haven't given much information but please let me know what you need and I'll be glad to post it ASAP.

Correct. They will not work with a Netserver card either. About all you can do with them is get the serial cables and run them off an external terminal server.
I have a very old Netserver PRI as well which I've tried before and that doesn't seem to work either. TCM can't configure it becuase it says "Can't read a home directory from netsrvr.ini" so using the serial cable I've attempted to configure it following the book which seems to be very short on troubleshooting information. Does anyone know how to get TCM to work with this card?
TCM can't do much with the netserver (or hiper arc). There are seperate programs for each, but I think telnet is the preferred management program. :) Don't waste your time with the netserver. Been there, done that, it won't work with those cards.
If I were to pick up a few Digital/Analog modems, does the analog NICs I already have work? They're labeled "Quad Analog/RS-232 NIC"

Quads labelled "Analog", no. If they are labelled "Analog/Digital", no problems. Just make sure the line source on the modem is set to "nic".
Point tcm to your NMC IP, not the HiPer ARC, click on a modem and choose the "Line Interface Options" pulldown. You'll see one of the options is something along the lines of "line interface source" with a pulldown for T1tdm, PRItdm, and nic. You want the nic setting. Don't forget to set and then go out and do a save to nvram.
Your arc must either be set to either use chassis awareness or you will need to specify what types of modems are in each slot, and their density.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't have a T-1 card and I couldn't find an equivalent setting on either the HiPerARC or the NMC. I have TCM version 5.5 and it doesn't seem to be able to talk to the HiPerARC. I get an error of "Programmed Settings not supported for this card or version". I've been using TMC for configuring the NMC and the HiPerARC manager for managing the HiPerARC. I've done some messing around and I now have it to the state where the modems ring but do not answer now. The DIP switches on the analog cards are set to answer after 1 ring.
