This is all old news. I got my first USR quadmodem chassis back in 97 and when X2 came out we had the same complaints. v.90 followed a year later and we still had the same complaints. Two/three years after v.90 v.92 is out and we still have the same complaints. Switch out your gear. There are many more agressive RAS vendors out there that will give you what you want (Cyclades, Patton are ones the I use also) and thier forums are never clogged with posts like these. I have less than 1000 ports total so I know Commworks really couldn't care less if I go or stay. -- Paul Farber Farber Technology farber@admin.f-tech.net Ph 570-628-5303 Fax 570-628-5545 On Mon, 18 Nov 2002, Network Admin wrote:
I had to throw in my 2 cents after considerable thought and time!
I didn't renew my service contract this year or purchased more hardware because:
1. With the FCC cap of 53k data transmission I don't see much improvement past v92 for the future.
2. I can buy the same HiPer DSP card today for $1,000 that cost $5k in 1999. Of course, back then, There were over 7,000 ISP's.
3. What's this about the best v92 results seem to come from LT Win modems? I spent years explaining to people why not to buy them!
4. I can't understand why commworks and USR are structured apart from each other. Commworks for commerce and USR for consumer, if I understand it right. My preference is to have the same engineering team serving the consumer of the product that I use.
5. I can't understand why v92 was released to the consumer market a year before it was released to the ISP's! This in my mind almost borders on massive fraud because of the simple question "What good is v92 if their is no place to connect it too"?
6. Frankly, the modem companies should be kissing our asses to use and sell their products! Aren't we the contact point for the consumer market? Don't we influence our subscribers?
7. What is the logic of forcing ISP's pay for code that supports consumer products that we don't profit from the sale of? I would think that they would go all out to have the best performence available for their consumer modem products!
8. All the questions cause me to believe it's not about the quality of the consumer product any longer, but rather how much green is available from whatever souce they can find it. The've got to be laughing all the way to the bank... Wow, we've even got the ISP's paying to support our products!
Anyhow, enough of my ramblings, but it sure feels better to get it out!
I've already started to support other modem manufacturers that appear to tbe concerned about the quality of service their consumer market maintains. It saddens me that I no longer feel proud, much less comfortable recommending the same modem manufacturer I'm using. It's no longer true that the best connection is one where two modems from the same manufacturer are connecting to each other!
