In my experience, the ARC and NMC couldn't care less if you skip versions from any particular base version. The HiperDSP however does have a problem downgrading from 4.5 to 4.3 so really the only version I think might be necessary is 3.1.7 for the HiperDSP. The first card I skipped to TCS 4.5 never quite worked right, and so I downgraded it. However, the only code I did that with was 2.1.85 to 3.5.12 Perhaps the issues I found were directly related to 3.5.12 and not the skipping of code. I run 3.5.109 and don't have any problems now. There could have been numerous things causing the issues he experienced. However, so far as I know the only thing he did to fix it was downgrade his HiperDSPs and then flash 'em back to TCS 4.5 I'm curious, which TCM version are you using? I'm sure if there were actually a problem, you would know it within the first week. -----Original Message----- From: Jeff Lynch [mailto:jeff@mercury.jorsm.com] Sent: Friday, April 09, 2004 3:49 PM To: usr-tc@mailman.xmission.com Cc: Adam Barnhill Subject: RE: [USR-TC] TCS 4.5 upgrade skips Adam Barnhill said:
You'll need to upgrade from TCS 4.3 to 4.5, if you don't you will (most likely) have modem handshake/connection/call handling problems.
Happen to know if is this an greater issue for the HiperDSP but not the HiperARC or HiperNMC? HiperARC 5.1.73 -> 5.3.110 (TCS4.2 -> TCS4.5) HiperNMC 7.2.8 -> 8.6.3 (TCS4.0 -> TCS4.5) HiperDSP 2.0.51 -> 3.5.109 (TCS3.6 -> TCS4.5) ! As you can see I went from 2.0.51 directly to 3.5.109 but have had no problems so far in test setup. MOH and PCM upstream both work well. TCM works fine (config and perf monitor, other common stuff) and I did a complete power cycle test and everything recovers no-problemo (tells me NMC and save/restore NVRAM probably OK, yes?). Harc routes fine and does everything we had it doing before, including participate in RIP2 with cisco (as well as RIP can be expected to do). I can move the HiperDSP from 2.0.51 (or 2.1.85) to 3.1.7 before going to TCS4.5 (because I have that dmf). But this is the only interim release my former Network Admin obtained before our software contract expired. I did decide to sacrifice these three cards (harc, hnmc and hdsp) to try this upgrade skip before re-contracting. Stll has me wondering if the "upgrade in steps" is a ploy to keep us buying software contracts without lapse, but I may have just disproved this being necessary. We've kept under contract until now, looks like our hardware is dead for software updates and dialup is not really growing. Thus my debacle. Couldn't there be several reasons to explain the problem referenced below? Inexperience with chassis upgrade. Their pickiness with restore from default, change config, save to nvram, hardware reset. Miss a step, do too many at once, etc.... Hopefully there are fewer concerns if the NMC and HARC work fine after upgrade. I did delete the harc router config after the bruteforce zmodem upgrade and re-built the config from scratch. So far so good. I will next try without PCM upstream to see if quick connect improves. Not using 3.5.12 as referenced below (using 3.5.109). Fingers crossed. --jeff
This snippit was from an individual that did a very similar upgrade as you are suggesting. A downgrade to TCS 4.3 and then back up to TCS 4.5 fixed his problem. V92 features were confirmed working after the re-upgrade to TCS 4.5
Hi again tnx a lot for a quick reply, this is the scenario i got NMC version8.6.3 hiper arc 5.3.3 then Hiper DSP 3.5.12 so i upgraded my
tcs
4.0 to tcs 4.5, i got problem when i use the 4.5 version i mean it does not connect using a dial-up connection i got a busy tone. So kindly help me what is the problem, it is possible of my e1r2 configuration?
If you have already upgraded to 4.5, make sure you prep your downgrade to TCS 4.3 otherwise you'll end up with paperweights.
To do this, console in to the HiperDSP, chdev mdm1 then enter at-re1 and reboot. Downgrade code to 4.3 on reboot. After you have a
successful
4.3 configuration that takes calls, upgrade to tcs 4.5

Since I still have old hardware on the old code I'm safe and only risk trashing the three cards I've upgraded. But still back where I started, with v.92 code but no v.92 yet. Oh the joys of delegating responsibility! Has anyone successfully jumped across several TCS versions before and lived to tell about it? I haven't pleaded to utstar yet to see if they'll let me have the in-between versions, plus I'd hate to have to do so many stinking upgrades anyway to get to TCS4.5. Plus without hardware upgrades, I think I have the latest software I'm going to get. I can remember the steps but if you are on real old code you do have to step up. Some others on the list might know from what to what. -- Lewis Bergman Texas Communications 4309 Maple St. Abilene, TX 79602-8044 915-695-6962 ext 301 800-299-6962
