I agree with the other posters so far...this is a phoneline+modem problem. Meaning, the modem can't detect or can't compensate for the impairments on the phone line. There's a lot of engineering going on behind the scenes when a modem makes a connection...basically the modem has to determine the conditions of the line, and it must do so very accurately for a successful connection to happen. Some modems can't figure out what to do on some lines. There are modems which do better on most lines, and those are the ones that people recommend...there's already been some recommendations in that regard. One notable thing is that often a modem's firmware can be upgraded to later versions, which can perform better on some lines. This firmware upgrade can make a difference on the ISP end too, another reply to your message gives an example of that (Seth Jacob's reply about HiperDSP code versions). I have a customer who's computer will connect with no problems in town. (small town - 6500 population - Trumann, AR) Connect speed of 40.something.
That same computer when he tries to connect at his house (about 5 miles out of town) will not connect. He has managed to connect a couple of times, but now it will not verify his login at all. His modem is a lucent win modem. It will connect but it will not verify his username and password. And it takes an extremely long time to try to verify his username and password before it fails. The message is usually that the remote computer did not respond. I have tried lowering the baud, but this did not work either.
I told him to call the phone company (CenturyTel), which he did. They say that the lines are ok and it must be my equipment.
I have taken my laptop out to his house and can connect every time but only at a speed of 20.something. From my house in town my laptop will connect at 48.8. I do not here any static on his line thru the phone, but I do here a small amount of hum.
I called my buddy that works for the local phone company and he said that the lines in that area are run to local box and connect back to the co via a t1. He also said they have run a loop test at the customers house and that checks out.
3 out of 4 customers I have in that same area have had the same problems. I do not know what speed the one customer connects at, but he has never called to complain about anything.
Could there be something not set right with my chassis? Anyone else had a problem like this?
