Not sure if it’s the same using a netserver as my only experience is with hiper arcs but from within the hiper arc you can do several things:
Show nmc settings
List chassis
Set chassis slot x card_type hdm_30 etc etc
You can use ? marks to see all of your available options

If you do a list chassis and don’t see any slots “owned” by that hiper arc then you’re going to get dead air or some similar unwanted telco response.
If you would like the NMC to map everything for you, you need to have nmc chassis awareness enabled.

You should be able to run a chassis without the NMC unless you have special circumstances such as quad modems reguiring v.92 or say if you're utilizing auto response. My guess is that you didn't have the DSP's mapped to the slots, hence you put a NMC in with chassis awareness enabled and it mapped your dsp's for you hence "making things work."

in many cases we wanted to set up an E1 with Hiper DSP, it worked no way and there was silence on line, no answer from DSP, we replaced chassis, Hiper Arc, DSP but no result Finally we put a NMC in slot 17 and it worked!
