Best, Tony Anthony DeBlasi Secretary-Treasurer T'ang Studies Society CALL FOR CONFERENCE PAPERS “Making Connections: Contemporary Approaches to the Tang Dynasty, In Honor of the Opening of the Elling O. Eide Library” Dates: November 10 – 12, 2016 Location: Elling O. Eide Library, Sarasota, Florida The T’ang Studies Society will convene a conference in November of 2016 to explore novel approaches to the study of the Tang Dynasty. The conference title emphasizes the Society’s goal of forging connections of three types: (1) bringing together different disciplinary perspectives on the period; (2) bridging different generations of scholars – from advanced graduate students to senior scholars; and (3) forging a research relationship between the scholarly community and the newly founded Elling O. Eide Library’s resources. Elling O. Eide, a scholar of medieval China, amassed a significant collection of books and other resources before his death in 2012. The Elling O. Eide Charitable Foundation has overseen the completion of the Eide Library to hold this collection and open it to scholars of China. The Society will hold the conference at the Elling O. Eide Library in Sarasota, Florida. Panels have been organized to cover the following disciplinary perspectives: Tang Art and Material Culture, Tang Prose, Tang Poetry, Political History, Social History, Tang Religions, and the Tang Dynasty in the World. To better realize the theme of “making connections” and encourage a more free-flowing conversation, the conference will conclude with a plenary session reflecting on the conference, the state of the field, and the role of our journal, Tang Studies , in stimulating and publishing new scholarship.. There remain a limited number of slots open in these panels, and the Society seeks proposals from scholars at any stage of their careers to fill those slots. Proposals should contain the author’s name, institutional affiliation (if appropriate), address, and a 250-word abstract of the paper. Please send proposals electronically to the Society’s e-mail address at conference@tangstudies.org by April 1, 2016. Decisions will be made by May 1, 2016. Lodging, conference registration, and most meals will be provided by the Society for those presenting papers at the conference. Registration materials for scholars who would like to attend without presenting a paper will be made available in April, on the T’ang Studies Society website. Please note: one must be a member of (or join) the Tang Studies Society to deliver a paper at the conference. Members and non-members are welcome to register for and attend the conference. For more information about proposals, membership, and conference registration visit the Society’s website at www.tangstudies.org .
