Settlement reached in fatal tire-defect lawsuit

A man whose father was killed in a tire tread separation accident in 2000 has settled a lawsuit against Firestone/Bridgestone Inc. The suit blamed the fatal crash that killed retiree Gildo "Gil" Pantuso and his best friend, Ralf "Ed" Jones, on an alleged defect in one of the company's steel-belted radial tires. A Triumph 4000L tire tread flew apart in Jones' 1983 Ford Ranger in 1999 on Interstate 15 near Lehi. An attorney representing Pantuso's family declined to comment on the terms of the confidential settlement.
