Susan, if your request is due to my comment, I publicly apologize. That was my attempt (lame though it may have been) at humor. You raised valuable insight as to the competing purposes re the mileage competition. The mention of Palm Springs, Las Vegas, and people able to ride all the time, however, focused my focus-challenged mind on the evils of an 8-5, M-F job, especially during smog-alert, cold temperature inversions. I have dual memberships -- the BBTC and the Las Vegas Valley Bicycle Club (LVVBC). Maybe this can help:
The LVVBC has a large number of riders who are retired, so therefore we also have scheduled club rides during weekday mornings. Those who are retired or have more time off are always at an advantage for mileage awards because they can do four club ridces a week to the one or two the rest of us can do.
So currently, we are figuring on limiting mileage awards to only those rides the club actually sponsors/leads. That means the group of us heading to the Palm Springs Century don't get to include that 100 miles. But we do get to include the 90-mile ride the LVVBC sponsors on a weekend trip to the Grand Canyon North rim.
I suppose it is a matter of deciding what you want the mileage award to accomplish: Rewarding people who ride, whether or not it is with the club, or rewarding them for logging a lot of club miles and supporting the club.
After all, if there aren't enough rides for them to log the miles they want, perhaps they should lead some rides. As the former BBTC ride captain, I know how
hard it is to get leaders. Maybe this would serve a dual purpose.

The dead line for posting rides for Jan and Feb is fast approaching. If you are thinking of leading any rides during these winter months you only have five more days to post them in time for approval and getting them into our newsletter.
FYI: It has been asked if out of state rides would be eligible for club mileage credit. To date, it has been club policy to not award mileage for out of state starts and since we are already into the winter riding cycle we will continue to operate under that same ruling. What are your thoughts on this? Would you, the members of BBTC, like to allow miles earned for out of state rides if they are posted within the guide
lines of the ride calendar?
Or, does it create an unfair advantage for those fortunate to have the flexibility to go south during the winter months and extend their riding season to year round? I realize not all of us are inspired by the potential to be the high mileage leader of the club but are happy with going out for a fun pedal with good friends on a nice day and don't care either way about the miles. I understand and think that's great, I would still welcome your input on the subject as I begin and continue to
learn the role of road
captain and work to create rides for every member and bicycling enthusiast.
