Red "Dirt"

Summer is hot here in Moab and I'm cooling off with a Lemonade/Iced Tea at midnight as I reflect on the fundraising donations process of the Skinny Tire Festival and the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF). Maybe its the heat, but I hear my inner Donna Summer voice singing "You work hard for your money, so hard for it honey" as I write this editorial. About 25 of the 775 cyclists attending the 2006 Skinny Tire Festival raised over 50% of the donations this year and I have to think they worked hard for their money: soliciting contributions, sending in donations, and perhaps most challenging, being witness to the stories behind every dollar given, especially knowing the "in memory" or "tribute to" reflections of someone touched by cancer. You did your part brilliantly and again, we thank you.

We just received word from LAF that all monies finally transferred from the Skinny Tire Festival account to the appropriate LAF LIVESTRONG accounts (the new way in which LAF tracks dollars raised). Some of you may have experienced delays in seeing dollars attributed to your LIVESTRONG accounts and we appreciate you hanging in there as LAF goes through this transition. Those of you who aren't registered for a LIVESTRONG ride may have received thank you letters from LAF attributing your fundraising to one of our core team members (Mark, Colette, Phyllis, Beth) - the official "TEAM SKINNY" in LAF's eyes. This too was due to the transition challenges LAF has experienced. One step that still needs to be communicated is how they will use these dollars. Where does the money go? What difference did all of your hard work make? We intend to provide those answers to you in e-newsletters coming your way every two weeks or so. So, stay tuned, stay cool, and turn up your iTunes to something you enjoy listening to. We'll be working hard to make sure your donations raised at THE SKINNY go to the highest and best use at LAF.

- Beth Logan (core team member of Skinny Tire Events)

Eddie Morandi

As the saying goes, it takes a village.....in this case, to execute the Skinny Tire Festival or Moab Century Tour. Let us introduce to you a core team member who's volunteerism makes these events fun for you. Cyclists, meet Ed Morandi.

Formerly from the East Coast, Ed has a long history of organizing, competing, and winning cycling races. He began racing as he opened two bike shops in the Boston area upon retirement from his consulting engineer career. Competing in 60 races per year in all disciplines for fifteen years, he earned recognition as Time Trial champion of New England at age 42, New England Regional Criterium champion at age 45, and consistently placed in the top two spots in the Killington 5 day Stage Race in Vermont. Nationally Ed placed sixth overall in the Time Trial discipline.

What brought him to Moab? "The sun", says Ed. "I used to ski and train in Salt Lake City during the winters and became familiar with the canyon country of Moab". Eddie lives in Castle Valley, Utah with his partner Paula who is probably the volunteer who handed you your wristband at the Rider Check-In table of our events and their adorable jack terrier, Bianca. Ed currently works as a consultant to Poison Spider Bicycles in Moab and has been with Skinny Tire Events from the beginning. As a core team member, Ed volunteers countless hours leading up to each Moab ride organizing, among other things, vehicle drivers, lunch sponsors, aid station food, and of course, the Poison Spider sponsored Time Trial at the Skinny Tire Festival.
