I think you put this very well. In the past few days, I've been a very unpleasant person to be around, because of this pretentious *real fan* talk. A real fan is someone who carries the music with them in life. A real fan is moved by the music. It causes INTENSE frustration when you CANNOT pursue what is in your heart. Regardless of what has been said, this IS different than just finding a way to go see Sting in concert. Those who are going to the RHOF and those who are not going, can go on justifying and complaining, respectfully...but what's the point? It's not going to make those going feel guilty or those not going feel better. It's because we're talking about feelings here, STRONG feelings. The fact is that ALL of us here are real fans, with true enduring feelings about The Police and their music. If true fandom is to be saved for those people who have a large disposable income which allows them to travel the world, pay mucho cash for transportation, hotels, and good seats, and those fans who do not have to show up at a job every day to support their families, then we are in fact narrowing Sting's fan base down to a small elite group of people. I think it's very consescending to sit back and tell the large majority of fans that they, too, could get tickets to the HOF show if only they loved the band enough to miss tons of work, get babysitters for their kids, and amass a huge amount of debt. Not to mention, there are only a very small number of seats available in the first place, so even if 100 of us put in the time and effort you describe, we would not all be given seats. I don't begrudge you your persistence and good fortune in getting to see him so often and so close, that's great that you have the time and money to do this, but I do begrudge your attitude that anyone can do this, and your implied message that anyone who doesn't just isn't a good enough fan to deserve to see them . marilyn ________________________________________________________________ Sign Up for Juno Platinum Internet Access Today Only $9.95 per month! I don't even think it has to be that extreme. (Are there fake fans?) See, I dislike statements like (and I don't mean to target anyone by this) "Hey, (Sting / Andy / Stewart / whoever), I'm your greatest fan". First of all, you're being amazingly presumptious, by assuming that you *are* that person's greatest fan. Secondly, so what? Most people's greatest fans are stalkers. Ok, so that's unfair. But I do feel that being a Sting fan is not some sort of competition. If you're a Sting fan, you act according to your own nature - you might go to a hell of a lot of concerts, you might collect rarities, you might put up a website, whatever. Sure, if you've got a history of going to Sting concerts, if the management knows you, if your company has tickets to rare concerts *anyway*, sure, you're going to get to concerts the guy in the street with a website doesn't get to. Big deal. I think part of being a member of this mailing list - and by extension the Sting fan community - is that if you get privileged information, because you got an early release of a new album because you're a journalist, or because you got to a concert that most people couldn't get to, or you got backstage, you tell people. You share. And I don't think any of the people who have announced they'll be at the HOF concert, wouldn't share their experiences. Anyway, it's three songs or possibly more, it's not going to be the tightest band in the world as they'll have rehearsed for a week or two at most, and frankly I don't expect it to be that good. And if it *is* that good, well, I'll get the MP3 off Turning Leaf or something. It *is*, after all, just a novelty concert.
