Re: Uncut Article I should think there is tension between Many-Miles-Away and Sting. From what I understand, it was the work of Miles that brought about Kim Turner's lawsuit. To make matters worse, Miles has commented in public that he had an oral agreement with Kim that controlled everything. Good luck proving that. My hunch (for what little it may be worth) is that Miles brought about the lawsuit by being..........well, by being Miles. Can't you just hear him: "Look Kim, it's not your table, blah, blah, blah." Even Duran, Duran couldn't stand him for more than about a week. Can you imagine him getting cross-examined at a trial? He'd alienate a jury in twenty seconds! I've never understood how Sting could, er........"Cope[ ]" with him. Good riddance. Stephen S. I don't think it was Sting's award. While Randy Newman isn't on my playlist, I think the song goes with the movie very well...
Yeah, astonishingly, I actually found myself tapping my feet to it. Newman was very humble about it, even saying that he thought Sting would win it.
And must I be the only one on this list to say that I can't stand "Until"?
It's a difficult song both for Sting to sing and for the listener to really get into. Though, I think it's okay, it's not an award-winner to me either. However, I think it's worlds above that Paul M. song for Vanilla sky (personally because I cringed when he sang it).
As for Enya, I think she should have been nominated for the other song on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack. Of course, that one isn't in English. However, it's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
Teri
BTW, I kept puting on the radio during boring parts of the Oscar show--and it was one Police song after another. :)

hey!
i have read the cover story in uncut magazine on the the police twice and these are my initial impressions:
FIRST, stewart and sonia are divorced? i didn't know that/is this the case? article refers to her as his "then-wife"
SECOND, i got the distinct impression that miles is very bitter at the way his relationship with sting has ended. he made a few comments about sting that, had he still been on the payroll, i do not think he would have made
THIRD, that sting was putting TDOTBT band/album together while the police were finishing up SYNCHRONICITY tour
FOURTH, sting's comment at Paris press conference for release of "blue turtles" (parts of this press conference are on "bring on the night") "I haven't left The Police."
more to follow... rich

Well, to add my 2 cents, I'm glad Randy Newman won. Just because Sting was = nominated, doesn't mean he deserves to win! Kate and Leopold was a = "throwaway" movie, and I'm sorry, but "Until" didn't and still doesn't do = anything for me. It's not at all catchy at its best and awkward at worst. = Do you find yourself humming it throughout the day? Hardly. And it's too = reminiscent of "If I could save time in a bottle..."
I was more interested in the color of Sting's hair than the actual song. = That doesn't make me less of a Sting fan, it just means that I think he = has done and can do better work.
Randy Newman's songs are always catchy, funny, appropriate to the movie, = lyrically smart and unique. Sure, maybe after 16 nominations, it was a = sympathy win, but it was also a well-deserved win for a catalog of works. =20 I can't believe anyone honestly thought Sting would win, frankly. We are = huge fans, but 99% of the rest of the world can take him or leave him. = There were probably greater numbers of Faith Hill, Enya and Paul McCartney = fans rooting for their folks.=20
I guess many Sting fans were disappointed, but I wasn't. I'd rather see = him win deservedly.
Maggie

and so do I, I had the nice opportunity to talk with some Clannad groupmembers some years ago (family of Enya), and they are very fine people and the music Enya and Co make is brilliant ....
Until is ... well, just sucks anyway.

Okay, Here is where I stand on this. I would much rather them give the award to Randy Newman for a song that truely fit with the movie than to Paul McCartney just because of who he is. I do think that Until... fit the mood of "Kate & Leopold" but the song from Monster's Inc. actually had lyrics that propelled the story line, even if that movie is for children (which might actually even make the songwriting process harder..)
Now if it was an award given for performance and not songwriting I would have to say Sting should have walked away with it. Because you know, he was the best looking one there and I thought he sounded pretty good even thought you could hear the nervous quiver in his voice.
Just my 2 cents. Heather

hey!
okay, now i feel bad. Uncut is a British magazine. i live in new york so it is available here but may not be elsewhere. www.uncut.net is the website, it has contact info so, for those interested, you can get it from the magazine. i had to do this when sting was on the cover of Bass Player a few years ago...
