Last night, after I left the DD concert, I stopped by Backstage Cafe (Ian's place) because he was having a Police tribute band play and Stewart was going to celebrate a bit of his birthday there. I missed Stewart, but I got to hear the last 3-4 songs of the band. (And they played Man In a Suitcase at my request!) Let me tell you, the tribute band was FUN. It was 1/3 Stung and 2/3 Fallout. I'm still not sure how all that happened, but it was a melding of two bands. They only had about 2 hours to rehearse together, but you would have thought they'd been playing together for years. It was great to hear the "live" versions of the songs. The band did the Police justice, I thought. They sounded very good, and it was great to sing along. You would recognize the live versions from the most common live CDs I'm sure we all have (commercial and otherwise). Stewart jammed with the band on two songs. I wish I'd been there to see that. They played Roxanne and When the World, if I remember correctly. Bee from Stung (now there's a phrase) said that Stew played When the World as a slow version and he was a bit surprised by that. During Roxanne, Bee or the bass player lost the count and Stew yelled "One, two, three, four" at them and they LOVED IT! The Fallout drummer (sorry, can't remember names. Lack of sleep) had "fuck off you cunt" written on his drums, which Stew got a kick out of. Anyway, the guys in the tribute band got to play with Stew on his b-day and he was very nice and complimentary to them, from what I was told. There were several people there who were there to see the band and not just to enjoy drinks. Ian was Mr. Host and Mr. Congeniality. Very nice, as always. He was stoked to have the tribute band playing. Oh, I just remembered, I think Miles was there for while, too, but that we before I got there. Anyway, I never really cared for tribute bands much. But last night was a lot of fun, so I'll try to catch Stung or Fallout when I can. It's just great to hear the songs I love, live. I'm sure you can read more about last night on Ian's website message board www.backstagecafe.com Maggie
