From what I've heard of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, they are no where near as close as the same league as Andy Summers. Andy is a Jazz guitarist who happened to get involved with a rock group. He transformed a punk rock group into a completely original, extremely sophisticated rock group which to this day not many bands can compare to. Guitarists in the same league as Andy Summers might be Allan Holdsworth, Eric Johnson, Robert Fripp, Larry Coryell, John McLaughlin, Al Dimeola, and Kevin Eubanks.
To interoperate what you're saying below as comparing the two guitarists as the "Brains" of the band, I'm not that familiar with the chilli peppers stuff after the Blood Sugar Sex Magic cd and it is not fair to say Andy was the brains in the Police. The Police were 3 professors in a world of students. None the less, this is a nice subject to discuss. Is Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante in the same league as Andy Summers? Frusciante is the brains behind most songs by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, perhaps the only current rock group that is anywhere close to as good as the Police were. It would be interesting if Sting and John Frusciante ever shared studio time. Thanks for the insight.
HEy Guys, In total honesty Andy Summers is a brilliant guitarist, but The Police were a unit that was meant to be together to produce the sound they had. I was think of Andy as a painter when it comes to songs, he seems to see clearly what is needed for a song to work. He uses the right brushes to texture the sound of The Police. I will gave you a perfect example of how imaginative he is. Listen to songs like Tea in the Sahara, Secret Journey, Miss Gradenko, So Lonely, Every Breath you Take, Too Much Information, etc. Just to name a few. He has the right approach to every song. Not many guitarists can do all genres and come up with great ideas. I would seriously listen to every Police with my head phones on and discover 2 or three guitars doing different things. If you pay attention to the song Too Much Information there is actually Michael Jacksonesque type of guitar playing in the background giving it that groove. I really found that awesome. Tea in the Sahara was amazing because the guitar creates the atmosphere needed to support Sting moody voice. I can go on ... Andy is still underrated to my eyes. Too bad that in all those reunion shows he can't use all of his gear to reproduce certain sounds that were truly Police like sounds. P.S: John Frusciante is really good, i think he is much better than Dave Navarro in Red Chili Peppers. Dave is much better in Jane's addiction. John has to stop using high notes and feedback on his guitar, especially live ... He irritates the hell out of me during his solos. Cheers.
