Re: [Police] Travel in style (in Newcastle)
Panda- I lived in Newcastle for a year once. It is a really, really great town (or "toon," in the Geordie dialect), and a lot of fun. Pleaces to go / things to do: Grey street... This is the high street of Newcastle... the Theater Royale, where the Royal Shakesperian Company performs, is here. There are also a lot of shops and historical buildings. Grey street runs from the center of the city all the way down to the river Tyne. The quayside, along the Tyne, is also a neat place to go. There are a lot of old buildings there, lots of pubs and restaurants, and the night life is a lot of fun. There is the castle that Newcastle is named for... it's Norman, if I recall correctly, and dates from about the 12th century (again, IIRC). Not all that big or imposing, but neat nonetheless. There are also several old churches and cathedrals that are pretty. If you walk around the city center and down to the quayside, you'll have plenty to do and see. As far as "Stingish" landmarks... they are kind of spread out. The theater where Sting met his first wife is at the University, next to the Student Union. I saw some plays there while I was there. Sting actually grew up in Wallsend, which is a little outside the city proper, though I suppose you could get there by bus if you really wanted to. Last Exit used to play in Gosforth, which is slightly outside the city also. The place where they played (The Gosforth Inn, I think?) is still there, but it's nothing that special. When I lived there, I thought it was neat to just be in "The city in the fog where the seagulls play." The Geordies are a wonderful, warm, and generally friendly people. I don't know how good your English is, but be ready to not understand anyone... it's almost a different language! If I were going back to Newcastle, I'd just try to see the city and enjoy myself. It's a great place. -Tim
"Panda" <panda@karme.com> 9/15/2004 4:25:00 PM >>> Ok, guys, there we go!
With my trip to Newcastle still long ahead (is it in November, the gig I mean), I try to figure out how to spend my weekend there in a way that every self-respecting Sting's fan would do it. In style, so to speak! :-) Firstly I've heard that Sting's brother Philip is running a pub in Newcastle so if you know it's name (or even better it's address too), I'd be happy to hear about it. Secondly from your own experience there, which places did you go and what was made your heart beat faster by visiting it. It's time guys to share your own experience from your trips to Newcastle. Cheers, Panda _______________________________________________ Police mailing list Police@mailman.xmission.com http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/police
