That way, they can 'test the water', and if it's a hit, THEN they could proceed and do a new album. On the other hand, if the song was a flop, the damage to their 'legacy' would be minimal (eg. Don't Stand '86)
Why is whether or not they have a "hit" the barometer of success? I couldn't care less how many people listen to it. I don't think it's a stretch to argue that most of the best new music these days doesn't top the charts, or even reach them. Who cares? What difference does it make? And I can't see how a poor-to-middling new album could "ruin" their previous releases. Would you really like any of the first five Police records less if the sixth one was on par with a latter-day Sting album? Chris
