Re: [Police] sad Sting = better CD
Sting talked about this last night in the 60 Minutes II piece. He mentioned that he at one time thought that he needed to be sad in order to write good songs. He admitted that there were some good songs that came out of that time in his life, but that he did not feel the same way now (about the songwriting process). This is paraphrasing from the interview since I only watched it once. Hilary On Thu, 02 Oct 2003 15:36:22, "Don Morris" wrote:
I totally agree that a sad artist makes a better CD. Sting's Soul Cages, for example, pulls at your emotions from all angles. It is my personal favorite. His concerts during the Soul Cages tour are some of his finest works.
Another artist who made great CDs while 'down' was Phil Collins. His first two solo CDs produced great songs such as "I Missed Again", "In the Air Tonight", and my personal favorite "I Don't Care Anymore". A sad Phil Collins kicks ass and sells out concert; a happy Phil Collins produces CDs for Disney soundtracks and wallows in obscurity.
It's easy to see that Sting is at a very happy point in his life. (By the way, happy birthday you old fart) I've yet to pick up the new CD (will have to wait til the weekend), but after listening to the free previews (thanks to StingUs for the link) it sounds like a CD that will grow on me in time (like every CD that Sting has produced).
My .02 worth (that's .035 canadian).
