Personally, Sam is my favorite character and I was upset at how small Bill's part was in the movie. Otherwise, I thought they did a very good job at making the story exciting, because even though I enjoyed the books, sometimes I felt that Tolkien spent too much on the geneology and language and not building much excitement.
