from http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#policegabriel Morning all! We've got some good news for you fans of Peter Gabriel and The Police. Our own Matt Rowe got a great scoop from insiders at Universal Music. The company plans to release Peter Gabriel's Up on SACD on 1/14. In addition, they're planning 3 additional TBA catalog titles from Gabriel later in 2003 (no word on which ones yet, but my money's on Us, So and Security/PG4). Even better news is that the company will release the ENTIRE Police catalog on SACD in 2003 in honor of the band's 25th anniversary. This will include Outlandos d'Amour, Regatta de Blanc, Zenyatta Mondatta, Ghost in the Machine, Synchronicity, Every Breath You Take: The Classics and Live. Note that there's no word yet on possible DVD-Audio releases of these titles. Be sure to check out Matt's MusicTAP site for other SACD and DVD-Audio news. What is SACD anyway?
SACD stands for Super Audio Compact Disc .... http://www.sonymusic.com/sacd/
What is the big whoop about release on this format. IS anyone here gonna buy it(them)? **-----Original Message----- **From: police-admin@mailman.xmission.com **[mailto:police-admin@mailman.xmission.com]On Behalf Of Deborah J. I'm not gonna buy them. You need a "SACD" compatible CD or DVD player, and these are not usually included on standard (or entry level) kit these days. There is a bit of a format war going on between DVD-Audio and SACD. DVD Audio is apparently technically better, but with SACD being owned by Sony, you can see that Sony music is going to be biased towards the SACD format, with everything else going toward DVD Audio. The good thing about DVD Audio is that most of the discs these days are also formatted to play in a standard DVD Video player (with the enhanced audio quality available to those wth dedicated DVD-A players), leaving Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS in some cases for DVD-Video users. SACD will not play in ANYTHING that doesn't have the SACD logo on the front, so there is no point buying them unless you intend to purchase an SACD compatible piece of kit to play them on.
