"Every Breath You Take - The Classics" DTS Version
On the 2000 release of "Every Breath You Take - The Classics" DTS Version, there has been a lot of discussion regarding the version of "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da." If I remember correctly, there was an article that quoted Andy or Stewart about the remastering of that song. Something about they couldn't fine the original tapes and therefore they had to use a different version of the song. Now on to the question, does anyone know what article and publication this was discussed in? I need specifics! My memory is not what it used to be, so any help would be great. Ah, unfortunately I don't have a resource to quote but it *must* have been Stewart if it happened, because I remember someone on this list quoting Andy--at a book signing--as going "what!!? I'll have to get ahold of a copy of that. I had no idea." when they asked him why DeDoDo'86 was on the DTS hits. Christopher --- Jon & Susan <jsmessier@gmail.com> wrote:

I was digging through old emails and found this written by fellow lister, Matthew. Hey Matthew, do you remember any more details from this conversation you had with Andy? Cheers, Jon ----------------- Mathew Hoffman [mathew@wattobay.com] Fri 10/3/2003 5:45 PM Hi all, I asked Andy about this when he was down here in Oz back in 2001. He said the track was a just another version laid down for the what was supposed to be the re recordings of all the hits. If I remember correctly Sting had told the Australian Music press, during the '84 tour what the band were going to do for the 6th Police album - reinterpret all of the police hits. Gee Whiz!!! I saw Andy over two nights at the Basement in Sydney. What I remember is having a beer backstage on night one and talking more about Sydney and where I lived and where Andy lived in LA, and my time living in LA during the late 80's early 90's. Now after a beer or 5 and being in awe of someone that was basically of hero worship status ( now bowing and chanting "we are not worthy" ) the details are somewhat hazy. What I do recall was I asked the question about a slowed down, more vocal version of De do do... Andy looked puzzled for a moment or two, and I can't quite remember if it was Andy starting to answer the question or Dennis (Andy's sidekick) prompting him, but that was the answer I received. When I wrote my review <http://www.dvdfile.com/software/review/cd/police_everybreathyoutake.htm> of the DTS CD of Every Breath You Take, a greatest hits compilation, I didn't think much of or about the alternate version of De Do Do Do De Da Da Da. I assumed this version was the same version that appeared on the 2-channel release of this compilation. I've since received a few e-mails inquiring about this version, and looking into it further has revealed some interesting information. When the DTS CD was done, the producers of this disc went back to the original stems of every one of these classic songs to do the 5.1 re-mixes and 20-bit digital mastering. In the case of De Do Do Do, the original stems could not be found in entirety, only the complete drum track could be located. What they also found in its entirety was an original demo of the track by Sting. The DTS version of De Do Do Do is a combination of those two elements remixed in 5.1 DTS Digital Surround. I don't believe this version is available on any other release, which would make the DTS CD a serious collector's item and a must-have for any fans of the Police and Sting." See you. So, if I'm reading this correctly, what you're saying is that the song isn't even truly a finished Police track? It's pieces of the original version mixed with the '86 demo? What I still don't understand is did any of the band members approve this? If so, why isn't it reflected on the label? And why isn't the Don't Stand version on the DTS the slowed-down version, as the label says? It all seems like an error, really two, like the mixing techs confused the two songs.
