Fiction Plane's bio
The official MCA Fiction Plane bio has some interesting stuff. First of all, no where does it mention Joe's famous dad. Which is not surprising, just interesting. There's been an on-going discussion among folks on Ian's website about Fiction Plane. A few people who really dislike them, others who like them, and Ian (occasionally) who emphasizes that Joe and FP do not want to and never have ridden on Sting's coat tails. Ian is very clear about that, so the bio omission isn't surprising. However, this is. The bio reads in part: "By the spring of 2002, the band changed their name to Fiction Plane (after an early Sumner song title) and signed a deal with MCA Records. Then in June, producer David Kahne was persuaded to check them out at the King's Head Pub, the London club that serves as the band's home court. "Luckily, it was the best gig we'd ever done," says Sumner. Within weeks, Kahne was in pre-production with the trio in London, selecting songs and working on new arrangements. Kahne introduced the trio to drum wizard Abe Laboriel Jr., who loaned his abilities to the recording." That, my friends, is pure PR bullshit. I was *at* that King's Head show. Abe was in the audience and played several songs with the band. I talked with him and even have photos. It was VERY clear that Abe knew the band, was friends with Joe, etc. But, I suppose it sounds better than "Daddy Sting loaned Joe his drummer...." At the time, it didn't seem like the "best gig" they've ever done. It seemed a little awkward and disjointed because of the lack of a full-time drummer, but it's all about record label spin. Maggie
