Hi Maggie Lol,I was wondering the same thing.I mean, even for someone who maybe wasn't aware of Stewart's wacky sense of humour, you'd think it'd be obvious that he was kidding...also,it's interesting that the published reports list Sting as having been invited rather than The Police...so if they can't have the band all together they're inviting Sting as a solo act? A snippet from a story on Pollstar.com:
Artists have yet to be announced, but you can bet there will be numerous = big names on the bill. Published reports say that Mandela has invited = Bono, Macy Gray, Shaggy, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Bob Dylan, Elton John, = and Michael and Janet Jackson to participate. The Police were rumored a few weeks ago to be reuniting for the event - = even possibly teaming up with Bono. However, those were quickly quashed = when Miles Copeland - brother and manager to Policeman Stewart - said the = band had not agreed to play at the event. Tickets to the concert are free and will be distributed by competition or = lottery, details of which will be announced shortly. There will be live = coverage of the event on mandelasos.com, as well as a global TV broadcast. = "
OK - Since when did an obvious tongue in cheek JOKE from Stewart end up as = Stew and Andy RUMORED TO REALLY playing with Bono?!?!!?

Jason, thanks for explaining about this new format.I find it really weird that they're doing this;disappointing too.I mean, with the possibility that Stewart's "derangements" would appear as bonus tracks on the re-released Police albums,I (and I'm sure many others here) would have considered them an essential purchase. But if they turn out to be on some format that most people won't have, then what's the point of the re-release.Surely the record company won't make much money out of the albums, and they'll annoy the fanbase...

from http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#policegabriel Morning all! We've got some good news for you fans of Peter Gabriel and The Police. Our own Matt Rowe got a great scoop from insiders at Universal Music. The company plans to release Peter Gabriel's Up on SACD on 1/14. In addition, they're planning 3 additional TBA catalog titles from Gabriel later in 2003 (no word on which ones yet, but my money's on Us, So and Security/PG4). Even better news is that the company will release the ENTIRE Police catalog on SACD in 2003 in honor of the band's 25th anniversary. This will include Outlandos d'Amour, Regatta de Blanc, Zenyatta Mondatta, Ghost in the Machine, Synchronicity, Every Breath You Take: The Classics and Live. Note that there's no word yet on possible DVD-Audio releases of these titles. Be sure to check out Matt's MusicTAP site for other SACD and DVD-Audio news.
What is SACD anyway?

I'm not gonna buy them. You need a "SACD" compatible CD or DVD player, and these are not usually included on standard (or entry level) kit these days.
There is a bit of a format war going on between DVD-Audio and SACD. DVD Audio is apparently technically better, but with SACD being owned by Sony, you can see that Sony music is going to be biased towards the SACD format, with everything else going toward DVD Audio.
The good thing about DVD Audio is that most of the discs these days are also formatted to play in a standard DVD Video player (with the enhanced audio quality available to those wth dedicated DVD-A players), leaving Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS in some cases for DVD-Video users.
SACD will not play in ANYTHING that doesn't have the SACD logo on the front, so there is no point buying them unless you intend to purchase an SACD compatible piece of kit to play them on.

J.
