My thoughts (aka just my opinions) on sampling the album piece by piece: All of Sting's albums, but most obviously in "Mercury Falling" and then "Brand New Day," are a story meant to be listened to from track one to track end, bookended by a a musical phrase or lyric. To sample the music as released by sting.com or whomever is to listen to a chapter out of context. The song may seem odd or even repelling if the story isn't played from beginning to end. Although I am one of those who loves to read the last couple of pages in a novel, I am inclined to compare that to listening to a single like SYL: it doesn't spoil the enjoyment of listening to the entire album, but it does give an overall sense of what it's all about. Do I like SYL? Well, yes (the album version), but with some reservations: I can't wait until I listen to the story unfold from track one on and understand in some ways what Sting is trying to communicate to all of us.
