Re: [Police] vinyl to CD (sorry, this was blank when I sent the reply...)
Oh my goodness, sounds like more work than I had anticipated. I thought I could just hook it up and go, but the more I look into it, the colder my feet get! Very helpful site though. This little factoid alone is interesting: One play with a ceramic cartridge will ruin a record for good, so never lend your LPs out! So much to learn, and I'm thinking maybe I should just live w/out some of those "never to CD" LP's at this point. Along w/all of this, I wonder if my computer can handle the load as well. Ouch. Guess the anniversary gift may end up being for Christmas at the rate I'm going! I appreciate your taking the time to help me out! I've had great luck using my father's old turntable and a PHONO PREAMP to record into my computer soundcard. Here's a link for the preamps -- they "boost" the signal of the turntable without adding noise so the computer has an adequate "line in" signal. I've been very happy with the pre-am I got here (I chose the one with volume control):

As far as processing the sound once it's recorded, that's a little tedious. I usually record one long .wav file onto a program called goldwave (others like soundforge, etc will work) and use filters to remove crackels and hiss. Then split the big file into individual tracks, name them, burn to CD and make a cover.
Hope this helps.
