I would agree with this appraisal, at least in part. I wish there were more spontaneity. The two shows I saw were different in some ways (At Dallas #1, for example, Sting was off script many times and improvised over Andy's solo in Don't Stand) but in a certain way I felt like this was the "perfect" setlist and that's probably why they don't feel free to change it up. Skipping Every Breath or So Lonely? Clearly that is not an option at these prices. What puzzles me is why Sting didn't talk to the audience more. (Although I think he did finally drop the "Andy this is Stewart" joke.) That said, however, when they got going on So Lonely or Can't Stand or whatever I was mesmerized. It sounded like The Police and not some paint-by-numbers reunion. The music definitely counts for something, and yet the review of Dallas #1 I noticed was focused on Andy being "dressed like a stockbroker" and stuff. Irrelevancies, and a lot of printed reviews have been like that. Christopher --- Ross Viner <ross@rossviner.com> wrote:
There doesn;t have to be tonnes of theatrics for me. But if you watch a show, there is VERY little interaction with the crowd. They just blaze from one song into another. Even the spontaneous stuff, we now know, is not. If there was a better light show, or more dialogue between songs then I would feel a little more satisfied. But to go to two shows where Steward "seemingly" joked and ran about the stage, is disappointing. Even the non-music is rehearsed. I'm not criticizing. I've seen a musical force that has defined part of my life and personality (for others) before I die. I'm content. ~r.
