Enough cynical opinions (acutally keep them coming). It is, as Jer says, time to lighten up. Hence I offer complete speculation and utterly irresponsible and as far as know baseless gossip: Sting's had a thang for the lead singer of No Doubt (Gwenneth Stefani???), and at one of the award shows a couple of years ago, he commented on how "gorgeous" she is. (No argument from me.) They've been seen together recently, apparently will be performing together, and No Doubt's new album is entitled "Rock Steady." Now doesn't this lead to the inescapable conclusion that......................... Stephen S. Ohhhh, I'm afraid "going against everything the guy has been about" has left the guy in the past couple of years. The guy is about money. I don't like his music any less for it, nor does it make me a "bad fan" but let's be real, the old, (I'm in it for the music and because I love it) Sting is gone.
Funny, I just found a cartoon one of my family members sent me (phoenix or Orlando paper) from last year. Thought I'd share it with you.
It's by Ward Sutton and is entitled Schlock 'n Roll:
Remember back when... (it goes through panels with the selling out of songs) and then we get to the Sting panel: "and artists like Sting even debut new singles and have them appear in commercials at the same time." Under that a drawing of Sting with two speech balloons coming out---the first: "I wasn't ridiculously filthy rich enough so I had to whore myself out" the second: "I'm off to have tantric sex in my castle now. Ta-Ta!"
That brings me to my new little endearment when people ask me what's new with him. "You mean my little media whore?" Of course, I say that with no malice intended. It's just the way it is. More power to him.

"Schmoozing" in Hollywoood? That may be redundant. In any event, it goes
against everything the guy has been about. It's a bit sad to go back and
watch Bring on the Night, and hear Darrly Jones talking about never hearing
a "nothing" song from Sting, and Branford speaking his disdain for the
Hollywood crowd. I prefer the good old days, but maybe that's because I'm
an old guy.

You know I'm with you on this--but I don't have the feeling that it's about money perse. I think it's about fame and being seen (which probably sounds shallow, but oh well). He's been on top of the world, and I guess that having been there...he still wants to have some of that feeling. Think of the commercials as videos with a voice over. ;) Really, the same stuff was going on back in the 80's with MTV. Every product under the sun wanted to be promoted in a video. Now, the products want the artists--it's just switched.

Teri, you seem to have a love for the word cynical, or cynicism, and I am curious how you come to these judgements so quickly on the basis of an email. The comments I made about sting were valid, it is actually something that is being talked about in the trade at the moment as it is a recurring issue. I am also one of the least cynical people you will ever meet, so I found it amusing. Optimism is the food of life

Jer, you must be kidding! "Least cynical person you will ever meet!"??? This is coming from someone who for the first half of the tour was CONVINCED that Danny Q pressed a "magic button" on his laptop to sustain Sting's tantric "...tomorrow we'll seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee..."! ;-) I jest, Jer!
But seriously, Sting won the Golden globe fair and square. I don't see why people on this list would want to taint his award. People have complained about him not having written new material in a while, and when he finally does, he comes up with a sweet little waltz, wins a Golden Globe for it, and his fans call the whole thing a fix... I knew he would win the Golden Globe, the song had great potential. I would have had my doubts had he won for Funny Friend, but that neither grabbed the GG nor the Oscar. The GG's are not based on popularity or box office numbers. The fact that a lot of people aren't familiar with the song has no bearing on the quality of the song. Are people more familiar with the other nominated songs? I doubt so. I haven't heard Vanilla Sky because I boycott Tom Cruise, I missed Enya's song at the end of The Lord Of The Rings because of a bladder issue, and will probably not get around to see Kate & Leopold. But I assume most people who saw K&L also heard Until.
I am thrilled for Sting's Golden Globe, as was he. He really didn't expect it, judging from his reaction (and his manager's) and his speech. I said a while ago that he'd win it, and I predict he'll be nominated for an Oscar, and WIN (if the Academy doesn't give Sir Paul his obligatory vote...)
Finally, for those of you who still haven't heard Until, it's readily available on Morpheus, Kazaa, Audiogalaxy etc (the live Regis and Kelly version). I'll try to upload it tonight on my site.
Cheers,
Fred

I'm sorry but I absolutely, completely agree with every word Fred said. I was THRILLED when he won the Golden Globe. Why on earth would the possibly be an allegation that he won because it was fixed? He wins awards because he earns and deserves them, because he is an extremely talented man ....... talented as a composer, as an arranger, as a musician, and as a lyricist. PERIOD. It's that freaking simple.
My ever humble opinion, Anne

OK - here's what I find odd.
The Kate and Leopold soundtrack won't even be in stores until Feb. 5. At least that's what I've read. By that time, the movie will only be in a few remaining theaters (and I'm sorry, it was a fairly forgettable movie, anyway). Who is going to buy a soundtrack from a movie that's already left the radar screen (except for a few crazy Sting fans. Where DO these people come from?!?!)
Have you ever seen a soundtrack and a movie be released so far apart?? Often, the soundtrack actually comes out before the movie. Kind of generates interest, duh.
Kate and Leopold opened Christmas week. By the time the soundtrack is available, it will have been 6 weeks later.
I just find it odd that Sting won for a song that 99.9% of the population hasn't heard. Oh well, another award for Mickey to use as a paperweight. And hell, Behind My Camel won a Grammy, and you know most people just fast forwarded through that on their cassette.
And....is it just me, or are romantic comedies not very romantic and not very funny lately??? Kate and Leopold, Serendipity, American Sweethearts, etc. All pretty lame. Last really good romantic comedy....Four Weddings and a Funeral (which DOES feature a Sting song for you purists out there.) 50 bonus points to the person who can name the Sting song on the soundtrack.

OK, clearly I haven't posted in a while and I'm in a talkative mood.
Pop quiz - Which Molly Ringwald movie mentions both Stewart and Sting?
Hint - It was on TV last night, at least for folks in California.
God, I wanted to be Molly Ringwald when I was 16. Still kinda do!
