Hi there Feita, Gio here from Milan, Italy.
In situations like the one the band was in, with all those billions of dollars floating around, each one wanted a piece of the pie, if you know what I mean. The band decided that at least one track from each band member had to be in the album, and you know what that means moneywise. Also, if you check, every single release, usually has a track from the other two members of the band as b-side (try and check, almost every 7inch has a track by Andy or Stewart, and being a single, that means a good publishing income for them as well) so that they can earn a piece of the pie from this deal as well.
Said that, the lyrics of 'Mother' can fit the whole concept of 'Synchronicity', where two 'apparently' distant events (in this case, two characters) find a sort of invisible thread: a mother and a girlfriend, seen as the 'same' person by the storyteller who ends up being confused and see his mother in his girlfriend.
I guess Sting accepted it mainly because of the lyrics. Musically speaking I don't think he even plays on it, as usually Andy played almost everything in his songs. It's an interesting tempo, it has a 'world music' sound, and that always intrigued Sting. I know he would have loved only his songs in the record, but he had to face the fact that he was in a band, and not a solo artist.
One of the reasons he left the 'band' formula was that he didn't want anymore to 'split' the artistic direction with Stewart and Andy and wanted to release something where he could have a total artistic freedom.
Best,
Gio

Thank you very much for sharing the link. I love Rick Beato's interviews and videos. And I love Andy more :)
I understand that in a short interview for a youtube channel the questions are gonna be all about the hits, but for us, the fans, questions will be more detail-oriented and about less known songs. I have many but, casually, two friends of mine, from different places who don't know each other, in the same week they asked me the same question, and it is a question I also have for many years: what the hell is Mother doing in Sinchronicity? I mean, I like the song but, undoubtedly, it is absolutely out of context. You can argue that the last 3 songs of Ghost In The Machine may be a bit different but I think they are somehow more armonically mixed with the rest of the disk. I couldn't answer the question, and it is a question I also had since I listened to Synchronicity, but I assumed an answer: the boys were hating each other and fighting for everything and Sting said "go to hell, do whatever you want". I don't imagine Stewart arguing with Andy for that.
Well, just thoughts that arose by this coincidence of the questions.
Happy new year for everyone (feliz año nuevo) from Buenos Aires.
