Too true.  It’s just a ploy to get people to read, talk about, and most importantly, buy whatever newspaper, magazine, book, etc. that it is printed in.  It’s obvioiusly not based on any kind of factual reporting.  It is only the writer’s opinion – most likely amped up to provoke a response.  Rolling Stone did a similar thing not too long ago where they listed the 100 greatest guitarists of all time and ranked the likes of John Mayer and Jack White ahead of a few legends.  It annoyed a lot of readers, got a lot of press, and likely sold a lot of magazines.  But it didn’t change my view of who is great and who isn’t.
