Judging from your “gack, yack, ergggggh” comment regarding Broadway musicals, I take it musical theatre doesn’t rock your boat. (See what I did there?!) And that’s fine, to each his own. I’m not a fan of lute and couldn’t hum a single song off the Labyrinth if my life depended on it. But I do like show tunes, and The Last Ship has some very good ones. Some songs stand on their own, but as an album, it’s better appreciated as theater than as a pop album, which this decidedly is not. And that will inevitably annoy those of us waiting for another Ten Summoner’s Tales. But I’d rather have The Last Ship than Sacred Love Part II. What's different between this and his previous works? I see nothing new here (it's even old, old, old subject matter.) And what is here is frankly boring, with most songs sounding like each other. And while continuity throughout a project makes sense, this is well beyond being desirous of continuity. I used to love Sting because everything he did seemed to be turning over new ground. No new ground here, not even interestingly re-worked old ground. This seems like nothing more than a vanity project, a personal project. That's great, that's fine. Maybe he's honing his Broadway Musical Skills (gack, yack, ergggggh) for a future Boffo SRO project. But this is not that.
