Mag, you hit a sore spot with me, one that i can go on AT length about, but one that i will spare you all and give a shortened version. The music industry has turned into a running joke the last few years. Industry people (label heads, marketing gurus, those that control radio formats, the various people that work at MTV/VH1, etc...) know little and care even less about quality music these days. Wherein our society used to be more patient when it came to an artist - allowing him/her/them to develop over the course of a few albums, today, if you do not have a hit right out of the box, you are finished. Today's music pales in comparison to decades gone by - but no one in the "industry" will ever admit to this, instead they continually run a smoke and mirrors game on us all - trying to convince us that band X is great, is just as vital as those coming before him. Such positions are completely false if you ask me - and believe me, I am out there trying this new stuff out! ANYWAY...I live about 30 miles away from Philadelphia. And upon seeing the "talent" that was going to play at the Live 8 show there, at no time did i entertain thoughts of attending. It would have been a honor to see Stevie Wonder...but to have to sit there through the rest of them...no way. I don't know about you, but there was only one thing about Live 8 that excited me (this from a musical standpoint). And that, OF COURSE, was the Pink Floyd reunion. I sat in front of my TV beginning at 4pm on Saturday afternoon - about 11pm in London. And about a half hour later, there they were. I must admit that it was a moment that I will never ever forget - seeing Roger Waters and Dave Gilmour on the stage together. Pink Floyd played 4 songs at Live 8. Upon completing the 1st 3, I thought to myself "Cool...MTV is not going to blow this. They are going to show all 4 Floyd songs with no interruptions. They get how important this is.". No sooner than my finishing this thought, MTV DID interrupt the might Floyd, did break away to a commercial...and did ruin it. American coverage of Live 8 - both during the concert, before it and after it, has been terrible. And I KNEW it would be. Because today's "industry" just sucks, and they will seemingly forever miss the joke. Live 8 - politics aside - is about the MUSIC, not about VJs talking or interviewing the crowd. I also go the sense that American coverage was force-feeding the Philadelphia show down our respective Yankee throats. There is NO debating that, for all the Live 8 shows, the London show was THE BEST. However, MTV/VH1 would show about 5 minutes of a London performance, interrupt that performance, then breakaway to an equally important happening in Philadelphia (there weren't any equally important happenings in Philadelphia, believe me!). All of it is just a shame. I saw an article in a newspaper yesterday claiming that Live 8 was the greatest concert ever. Not to me... --- Maggie White <maggie3661@yahoo.com> wrote:
I'm on a U2 list and everyone has talked about how terrible the US TV coverage was. Apparently, the ROTW had great coverage of the concerts. But in the US it's like it would have killed MTV to show an entire song without breaking away to a commercial or commentary (the same thing, every time) from the VJs.
I caught the last 2 seconds of Driven to Tears after coming home from the grocery store. I flung the bags on the counter and sat to watch EBYT, melting ice cream be dammed. The ice cream didn't have long to wait, however. MTV only showed about half of EBYT then went to the announcers chatting while I could barely hear and see Sting in the background. They did that with every artist. Shameful.
