Holly, I am very happy for you - you are indeed lucky today... Rich --- Sweetmomb@cs.com wrote:
Now it can be told... I was chosen at random by my local classic rock station (93.7 the BUS!! Glad to plug them!) to meet Sting. There were 22 of us, from 4 different radio stations who gave tix away. We were herded into an elevator and taken to a hallway outside three dressing rooms: The one on the left was for Phantom Planet(who were upstairs playing at the time, actually), then there was a dressing room labeled "Sting -- Band", and the room next to that had a big star on the door with the word "star" under it, and was labeled "Sting". We stood against the wall as if we were waiting for a firing squad, then al of a sudden, the door to the dressing room opened and there he was! Black t-shirt, dark pinstripe suit, little strip of beard in the middle of his chin (yuck). Lovely skin. Hair a tad on the mohawk side but not too bad. Skinny! He remarked that he had just woken up, and he was still a little groggy. I was about the 5th in line, and I had my trusty camera, which is now an antique, even though it was a state-of-the-art 35mm camera just a few years ago. The other person who won a pass from my radio station offered to take our picture, and Sting just came right over and stood on my right and put his arm around me. You will all be so proud of me, I didn't throw up on his shoes or anything! In fact, I said, quite calmly, "While I have your ear, are you familiar with the song 'What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life' by Michel Legrand?" and he replied, "Yes I am" and I said, I would love to hear you sing that, because you have the perfect voice for that song", and he replied, "I will -- just for you" and I blurted out, That would be 'For Holly'!" and he laughed! Now, of course he didn't sing it during the show, but I don't think he was being ignorant, he seemed very sincere at the time -- and I was, naturally, floating! Here's hoping he records that sometime in the future! He went on down the line -- he only spent a couple of seconds with each person. I had a few CD inserts with me,and a purple Sharpie pen. When he got to the end of the line, he started signing things. A nurse I happened to know (She's married to a DJ from one of the stations who were there) asked if she could borrow my pen so he could sign her ticket. After he signed her ticket, I gave him my CD insert to sign -- it was Blue Turtles, because it was a light color and you can see his signature really well -- and I got his autograph! He made some remark about how he should have shaved, and my friend said, "I can do it -- I'm a nurse!!" and we all laughed. He was then ushered back to his dressing room, and I happened to be standing in the middle of the corridor directly opposite him, and he turned around to the crowd and said, "Thank you" and I said, "Thank you for coming" and he smiled and waved to me. It was an incredible experience, and then I went up to the concert, where I had second row center seats, and he was directly in front of me -- no more than 10 feet away! The setlist was pretty much the same as has been reported, but the amazing thing was that he ran through it with virtually no breaks! Just one song after another! He occasionally sprayed his throat with a little spray he took out of his pocket, and he sipped from a cup of what seemed to be Mountain Dew, but otherwise he just went right through the set. There was one moment when I almost lost it, and it wasn't really even a Sting moment -- let me explain: many of you have probably heard the story about how John Lennon told his son Julian that, after he (John) died, he would make a feather float down in his room, and that's how Julian would know John was alright. Well, Sting started to sing Lennon's "A Day In The Life", and a feather floated down in front of Sting! My daughter was with me, and she saw it too, so I wasn't seeing things. It was a very strange moment. But the concert was absolutely wonderful. Highlights for me: End of the Game, a very strong Roxanne, Synchronicity, Why Should I Cry For You. I enjoyed it so much, I only took one picture during the entire concert, but I did take several in the meet-and-greet, so I will get them developed and post them as soon as I can. I hope the one of me and Sting comes out -- I just handed my camera to this girl I never met before and hoped that she could shoot straight! His voice was strong, and the concert was amazing. I'm running out of adjectives! The drummer was very Stewart-esque - he did a great job, and Shane Fontaine was very personable, and Dominic was Dominic. His hair is long again and he looks like the Dominic of old! Sting introduced him by saying, "Dominic Miller -- he's been with me for 15 years, man and boy. He started when he was 7. On the drums, Josh Freese, who *is* 7!" It was a nice moment. So, my grade for the concert, A+; my grade for the meet and greet, for me anyway, A++++++++++++++!!!!!!!!! I will never forget seeing him walk out of the dressing room towards us. It was very surreal. And even if he was being ignorant, I will treasure forever his reply to my question. I choose to believe he was being nice! Here is my last word: if this concert tour comes anywhere in the same HEMISPHERE that you are in, go. Hock your wedding rings and go. Do NOT miss this concert -- you will not be disappointed, I promise! Have a Great Week!!! Holly
