Can anyone clarify this? I've been doing some reading, and I don't get the impression that the first SACD release will be the 5.1 version? I thought that this version was coming out later? SACD is an attempt by the recording companies to improve the sound quality of the music and at the same time, curb "piracy" of their product. SACD is recorded with a higher sampling rate, so the sound is supposedly leaps-and-bounds better (I've never heard it for myself). The technology allows for multiple versions, so the PCM version (regular-every-day CDs) can be on the same CD as the SACD version (higher quality). SACD also allows for standard stereo and 5.1 multi-channel recording. Since it has a PCM copy, I assume this copy can be "ripped" from the CD like normal, but not the SACD version. The kicker is, most SACD players won't allow a digital output of the music (like the optical or co-axial digital output on a DVD player, this makes it harder to make a digital copy), the SACD player has analog outputs for each of the 6 speakers. Those SACD players that do allow digital outputs (usually fire-wire) use encryption techniques to make it more difficult to access the digital information, not to mention they are pretty expensive, and you'll need an equally as expensive reciever as well. Hope this helps, Jason --- amaryll <amaryll@norwoodlight.com> wrote:
that's a real bummer, because most of the cds are now 5:1 DTS. So I guess this is something like the thing between 8-track and cassettes so many years ago?

5.1. You have to have a
DVD player or cd player that actually says SACD on it. I guess the cool thing is that if you upgrade your gear someday then it'll be 5.1 encoded.
