I just received an email from ticketbastard about the "ticket exchange" they offer. I didn't read into it too much, but here's what they have to say about the barcode cancellation:

If you can't make it to The Police show, sell your tickets to other fans at Ticketmaster's TicketExchange.
TicketExchange enables safe and secure fan-to-fan transactions where sellers are guaranteed payment for tickets sold, without having to collect payment or deliver the tickets to the buyer.
Once your tickets are purchased, the barcode on the original tickets is canceled and new tickets are sent to the buyer via TicketFast email delivery.

Kind of nice that you don't have to ship the tix...

I had to return a single ticket to Ticketmaster for one of the Toronto shows – because I did it within 24 hours of the original purchase, I received a full refund.  After 24 hours, Ticketmaster refunds the value of the ticket (i.e. they hold on to the additional fees like the “convenience” charges).  I am not sure what happens if the tickets have already been mailed out or if they are in your possession already – I assume you would have to physically go to a Ticketmaster outlet to return them.  Also, I assume the return policy is the same as the US a it is in Canada, but I do not know that for sure.
