steve-o is right on the money here! while admitting i LIKE SL, one thing is not in dispute: the musicianship of sting's list 2 solo albums is SEVERELY lacking. those of you that do not like MF, at least it has evidence of musicians creating something on it, of musicians being pushed, not coasting. thanx steve... rich --- newfie <newfie@saber.net> wrote:
I couldn't agree more with Robert. I've been trying my hardest to like this album, and hoping that like some jazz tracks, it simply takes a while to appreciate. But the music is just not there. I'm not saying Sting doesn't have relevant things to say, but from a production (Kipper) and arrangement (?) point of view, the album is mush. Take all his prior solo albums, and there is not one song on Sacred Love that makes the top 20. Perhaps, in abandoning the "pain" he felt he had to contrive to write songs, Sting has come to peace with himself ("It's good to be Sting". I still can't believe he said it, as entitled as he is to feel it). Musically, however, this sounds likes a lounge act, and if you watched the A&E special, I have to imagine that anyone who has followed his career from early Police days, must still be throwing up over the unconscionable versions of Walking on the Moon and Roxanne (Andy and Stewart must be laughing through their tears). To call this experimentation is far too simplistic; he's made parodies out of these great songs. I'm happy for Sting that he's happy with himself, but from a musical point of view the world of Sting is indeed running down. Thank goodness there is still is his older, "pained" work; it's the best of what's still around.

hello all, i purchased sting's new disc through the itunes music store, but until last night's a&e special, had actually not had the chance to listen to the new stuff that much. after viewing the show last i do have a few thoughts on sacred love.
just like my views on peter gabriel, sting and his "world music" vibe is very hard to me to get close to. i love sting's voice so much, that he could probably sing just about anything and i would listen. the musical aspect is what is so hard for me. sacred love is my favorite track right now and FATFATSF is actually a close second. Dream of the Blue Turtles is one of my top 10 albums of all time and i always unfairly compare everything sting has done since to it.
basically, it's just that this last few years decision to incorporate the eastern music vibe into his work, alienates me just the least bit. i thought brand new day did a nice job of balancing things out, while sacred love seems to embrace it too much.
whenever i say your name is now playing and his voice is so incredible. joy reminds me of oleta adams, very nice.
cheers, robert
