hey! i hope you have all had a chance to read the Uncut mag article on the police. there is something else i found interesting: the idea that the police reformed for the Amnesty shows because sting could not stand being upstaged by u2. i have mixed emotions on this theory: part of me cannot believe it. for one thing, sting and bono have developed into buds over the years. u2 also opened for the police on some GHOST tours. in 1986, sting was supporting his first solo album while u2 had a body of work to draw from - THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE being their 3rd(?) studio album. being the professional that he is, is it possible that sting could overlook this, especially since he limited himself as to the amount of police material he played on the "blue turtles" tour. on the other hand, the only ego in music that i have ever known to be on par with(even greater than)is paul "i have to close the show" maccartney. i think it quite possible that, given the egomaniac that he is, that sting really was bothered by his role as a u2 warmup and enlisted andy and stewart to helpe him get top billing on the shows. i don't know if any of you have ever seen video of the set the police played at the giants stadium show. i find it fascinating: stewart looks happy as a calm, andy looks like he wants to kill someone and sting looks like the most uncomfortable, out of place man on the planet. they didn't even look at each other - especially andy, who kept looking down. rumor has it that andy and sting had some argument before going on stage. also, they arrived at each show seperately and left the same way, in three different cars. regardless, as depressing it was these amnesty shows were the last time the boys played a true set together, it is equally sad, given how mad/unhappy/indifferent they seemed to be while playing... rich __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
