...and all the fuss about mary j. blige being on the record - it's not like he is singing with billie holiday! --- StingUs <frotri@panafonet.gr> wrote:
These reviews we picked up at various online newspapers and magazines:
Sting delivers another tasty, variegated bunch of adult rock songs on "Sacred Love" (A&M). He's playing the bad guy on "Stolen Car," empathizing with a runaway wife on "Never Coming Home," connecting with his/our romantic side on "Send Your Love" and the especially entralling "Book of My Life" and drubbing the government's war-on-everything philosophy with "This War." Good show.
Sting: It's been four years since "Brand-New Day." The former Police frontman apparently reaches for the funk on "Sacred Love," which features a duet with Mary J. Blige.
Sting Sacred Love, A&M It's been a tough few years for those who like to affirm their individuality by not enjoying the music of Sting. First, Fields of Gold somehow became a modern folk standard, thanks to sympathetic interpretations by TV pop show contestants. Then, one of the highlights of the last Johnny Cash album the brilliant murder ballad I Hung My Head turned out to be a Sting composition. And now, on his 10th studio album, Gordon Sumner duets with the great Mary J Blige. Whenever I Say Your Name may not quite scale the inspired heights of Blige's earlier collaborations with George Michael or Elton John, but alongside the commendably impassioned Inside, on which Sting sounds like a more emotionally engaged Randy Newman it does set the tone for an opening four-song sequence of unexpected intensity. After that, however, Sacred Love falls away, with the woefully smug Robert Cray pastiche of Forget About the Future, and some heinous Shakatak-style piano breaks. Ultimately, this album is more Aveda beauty salon soundtrack than definitive post-9/11 statement, but if anyone can fall between those two stools and get up without a bruise, it's Sting. Ben Thompson
