I woke my husband up at 3 this morning, asking him if we could fly to the opposite end of the US for a weekend to see The Police again. If you want to know the details and have some free time, here's the rest of the story....
I saw them last year, fairly early in the tour, and they were great. But not great the way they used to be, the show we went to was fairly jazzy. My husband was really disappointed. I wasn't disappointed, I had been waiting to see them since I was 8 years old, but I didn't run out and look for more shows to go to either.
This year, they came to my back door. Literally, less than 5 miles from my house, so of course then ya GOTTA go. So I got excited again, but with lowered expectations, and went to the Orlando show with my best friend.
The first show we saw, people only stood up at the very end. The Orlando show I think everybody only sat down during Invisible Sun, the rest of the time... let's just say this time you could tell they were once a punk band. The first clue that this one was going to be different was Demolition Man - blistering! Stewart was on fire! They played more of those older songs, too.
Been busy since Friday night, so last night was the first time I got to sit and really think about it, and I got more excited than I've been since the tour was announced.
You know what a "Bucket List" is? Things you want to do before you die. One of mine was to see them, check.
There are two venues I've never been to and always wanted to see a show in - Red Rocks is the first, and The Gorge at the George in Washington is the second. I was bummed last year when they never announced either of those. I found myself last night wishing I'd tried harder to get Red Rocks tickets when they came out, but I was thinking of last year's Police then.
On a whim, I checked Ticketbastard. Couldn't find anything at Red Rocks, but.., is that? It is! Gorge Amphitheater in George, WA! Are there tickets? Yes, and pretty good ones!
I went to bed thinking I'd ask in the morning, but when I got in bed the dog woke him up. I said "I wanna ask you something but I think you'll probably say no."
"Ok..." he says, sounding worried.
I explain about the Gorge. I explain about how different this recent show was. I tell him what a great Elvis Costello set he missed (he REALLY didn't like Fiction Plane). "Sure" he says.
"Don't you wanna know how much it costs?"
"No, I trust you not to spend too much."
Have I told you I have the best husband ever?
We're going to the Gorge in July.
